Job Summary

Supervises employees in highly technical sub-specialty area. Directly oversees all the technical operations of the laboratory, enforcing standard operating procedures and research methods.

Responsible for laboratory meeting quality assurance standards.

This position serves as the histocompatibility supervisor for the UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory (ITL), providing essential leadership and technical expertise for the Solid Organ Section and / or the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Section.

This involves overseeing staff training, monitoring, and supervision within these sections, ensuring they possess the requisite skills and knowledge to fulfill their responsibilities effectively while meeting compliance standards.

A significant aspect of the histocompatibility supervisor's responsibilities involves active engagement in regular meetings with laboratory leadership and clinicians.

By participating in these meetings, they collaborate to organize and prioritize laboratory work, aligning activities with the needs and objectives of the healthcare facility.

This coordination ensures efficient workflow management and timely delivery of results.

Moreover, the histocompatibility supervisor is proficient in performing a range of high-complexity tests essential for histocompatibility assessment and transplantation compatibility.

These tests include HLA typing using diverse molecular methods, antibody testing and analysis, crossmatching donors and recipients, engraftment monitoring, and other immunogenetics and transplantation-related assays as required.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.

For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $120,300 - $236,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold : to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate;

and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus.

The Department is comprised of seven divisions including Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery.

The UCSF-ITL is a high complexity clinical laboratory that performs tests and provides services that support solid organ (kidney, heart, lung, liver, pancreas, islet, etc.

and hematopoietic stem cell (blood, marrow, cord blood, etc.) transplant programs. The laboratory is CLIA certified and is licensed by the states of California and New York.

The lab is also certified as a free-standing-histocompatibility laboratory by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).

The laboratory serves as a core laboratory for the NIH Immune Tolerance Network and provides support for several national clinical trials.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License.
  • California Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist (CHS) license or equivalent.
  • Lead / Supervisory / Manager Experience
  • In-depth knowledge of the genetics of the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system, essential for accurately interpreting and reporting results.

This expertise requires an understanding of the current and ever-increasing numbers of defined HLA antigens.

  • Skilled in performing complex and specialized testing procedures, ensuring accuracy and reliability in results.
  • Experience in performing clinical histocompatibility testing, providing a solid foundation of practical knowledge and expertise in the field.
  • Maintains current knowledge of laboratory concepts, new methodologies and advances in the field of specimen processing, automation, and procedures.

Ability to apply principles in a clinical laboratory setting.

  • Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory, medical center, HR and UC policies and processes. Thorough knowledge of all relevant sub-specialty area industry, health and safety, federal, and state regulations.
  • Ability to organize assigned staff and laboratory operations in an efficient and effective manner. Highly developed personal organizational skills.

Knowledge of quality assurance methods and ability to apply principles to design quality systems.

Proven ability to multi-task and reliably manage multiple projects through from inception to completion on schedule in a complex, challenging environment.

Flexibility to adjust to constantly changing priorities.

  • Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical clinical specialty concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel.
  • Ability to use laboratory's application programs. Skills to perform data checks using queries, visual review and other appropriate means to verify data accuracy.
  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
  • Interpersonal skills to independently convey information with authority, handle highly sensitive matters and interact with high level contacts from other organizations.

  • Licensure in specialty area preferred.
  • Maintains a tidy and orderly work environment, ensuring efficiency and organization in the laboratory setting.
  • Proficient in both verbal and written communication, capable of conveying information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.

  • Proven track record of reliability and the ability to multitask effectively, managing various responsibilities simultaneously without compromising quality.

  • Demonstrated accuracy in processing multiple samples without errors, ensuring the integrity and reliability of test results.
  • Proven ability to prioritize work effectively, ensuring timely completion of tasks. Strong communication skills to interact efficiently with clinicians and other healthcare providers, facilitating seamless collaboration and patient care.
  • Experienced in Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), and Quality Systems (QS) within a clinical laboratory setting, ensuring adherence to standards and protocols for accurate and reliable results.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Hematopoietic Stem Cell (HSC) and Solid Organ transplant protocols, both pre- and post-transplant.

This includes awareness of their testing requirements and the impact on laboratory resources, ensuring the laboratory is prepared and efficient.

Demonstrated strong leadership abilities with a proven track record of communicating tactfully and effectively with staff members.

This includes guiding team efforts and ensuring effective collaboration within the laboratory.

License / Certification

  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License.
  • California Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist (CHS) license or equivalent.
