Job Description
The Guardian ad Litem Attorney I is an entry-level position with up to three years of law experience. The incumbent must be an active Utah State Bar Association member in good standing.
An attorney Guardian ad Litem is appointed by the court to provide legal representation and coordinate assistance to abused, neglected, or abandoned children.
The duties of the Guardian ad Litem Attorney are outlined in Utah Code section 78A-2-803. This position requires excellent written and oral advocacy skills.

Example of Duties
Prepares cases by conducting legal research and gathering information.
Makes recommendations, gives appropriate advice, and / or facilitates decisions.
Participates in decision-making and strategy sessions to prepare cases for court.
Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents, and / or other written material.
Represents the best interest of their client(s) in all stages of the case(s) assigned.
Conducts independent investigations, negotiates settlements, and / or attends all court hearings.

Qualifications
Juris Doctorate and a member in good standing of the Utah Bar Association.
Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
General understanding of child welfare and / or district court proceedings.
Read and understand the information presented in writing.
Communicate information and ideas concisely and in writing.
General understanding of legal processes and procedures, applicable laws, rules, regulations, and / or policies and procedures, and ability to apply them.
Ability to analyze legal issues and research sound conclusions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, court staff, allied agencies, and members of the public.
Deal with people in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.

Supplemental Information
Experience in family and / or juvenile law.
Candidate must have a Juris Doctorate and be a member in good standing of the Utah State Bar Association. According to Utah Code 78A-2-802(4), GAL Attorneys shall have no clients other than minors whose interest they represent within the Guardian ad Litem program.
Must pass a background check with the Division of Child & Family Services.
