Under supervision applies systems administration concepts, department and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve routine issues.
Works on problems of limited scope. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.
Incumbent provides desktop systems administration : user account setup (Active Directory and G Suite), mail and mail list administration, Group calendar (O365 and G Suite) setup and administration, perform data backups and verify the performance and integrity of backups for client systems, install and upgrade hardware / software in a heterogeneous Linux / Windows / Macintosh / Solaris environment, maintain software licenses and records, hardware configuration logs, configure and support network printing and file sharing, and software / trouble shooting documentation.
User support responsibilities for Macintosh OS X, Microsoft Windows, and Linux desktop platforms include : answering user questions regarding computer hardware and software with tact and patience, troubleshooting hardware / software problems, and hardware / software installation and setup.
Network monitoring and security responsibilities include ensuring that all managed client workstations and laptop computers are in compliance with UC San Diego Network Security Standards including : installing security related OS patches, ensuring the proper operation of anti-virus and firewall software, and assisting SIO and UC San Diego security personnel with monitoring network traffic and security logs.
Test software packages for safe and reliable installation on users' computers. Document software installation and setup methods and protocols.
Train users in operating systems and application software.
QUALIFICATIONS
Completed coursework in a technical discipline such as computer science or information technology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems, including installation, upgrading and troubleshooting.
Experience with troubleshooting and resolving computer hardware, software and networking problems.
Experience with researching, recommending / selecting and purchasing software / hardware / peripherals.
Experience with anti-viral software installation, configuration, and usage.
Experience with firewalls and network and security monitoring tools.
Experience with at least one scripting language such as a UNIX shell (i.e., csh, Bash), Perl, or Python.
Experience supporting a variety of office, email, and utility software applications.
Knowledge of database applications such as Filemaker and RDMS such as Sybase, DB2, or MySQL
Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range : $61,800 - $108,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent : $29.60 - $51.72
