Position Focus :
This position will manage the daily operations of a cancer biology laboratory that leverages genetic, functional genomic, and translational approaches to identify and characterize cancer vulnerabilities and mechanisms of therapeutic drug resistance.
A major research emphasis of the lab centers on genetic targets in lung cancer. This position will be responsible for management of laboratory operations including procurement of supplies / equipment, maintenance of laboratory resources, ensuring compliance with institutional safety guidelines, and training of laboratory personnel.
In addition, the position will participate in experimental planning, perform independent research and data analysis, and contribute to published reports of scientific findings.
Essential Duties
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
Work with the PI to procure laboratory supplies and equipment while managing expenses. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills. Ability to work productively in a team environment.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Perform independent research using state-of-the-art laboratory techniques and participate in experimental research planning under the direction of a higher-level authority.
Required Skill / Ability 3 :
Ability to generate, analyze, and interpret scientific results. Maintain clear documentation of results. Prepare scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
Required Skill / Ability 4 :
Ability to work with Biological Safety officers to ensure compliance with institutional guidelines for safe laboratory practices and proper biological waste disposal.
Maintain equipment and scientific instrumentation; guide / advise users on appropriate use and scheduling.
Required Skill / Ability 5 :
Interact with the PI, research assistants, post-docs, and graduate students to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
Provide training and assistance to postdocs, students, and research assistants in planning and executing experiments.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Minimum 1 year exp. managing a lab or equivalent combination of education / experience. Experience in mammalian cell culture, lentiviral preparation & transduction of mammalian cells strongly preferred.
Background in molecular biology & genetics. Experience in basic lab techniques including nucleic acid, protein gel electrophoresis, cloning, Western immunoblotting & PCR.
