Job Summary :
As product design is becoming miniaturized and more sophisticated, the Automation Designer creates automated solution to assemble and test the company’s product in a high volume production environment.
Integrating the latest technologies in order to deliver reliable, modular and scalable solutions.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Identify automation opportunities working closely with design, manufacturing and process engineers to conceptualize solutions.
- Manage the design, purchase, installation and validation of the Company’s custom automated solutions.
- Work closely with industrial controls engineer in order to ensure sensors and actuators selected can be integrated and meet project requirements.
- Design and implement error-proofed machine interface including poka-yoke and prioritizing operator safety.
- Define standard solutions for sensors & actuators to minimize spare parts and reduce prototyping time.
- Design and fabricate POC for new custom applications in order to determine feasibility of solutions.
- Document commissioning instructions in order to assemble / align / calibrate new systems.
- Generate equipment / project requirements in order to capture the full design lifecycle of an equipment to be deployed in a highly regulated environment.
- Select materials to be used for each components in order to meet mechanical requirements.
- Create detailed CAD models of components and equipment assembly using Solidworks.
- Create detailed drawings with GD&T, exploded views and inspection dimensions.
- Hold mechanical design reviews with core team in order to ensure compliance to requirements and move through development phase gates.
- Select, size and integrate pneumatic systems in order to achieve reliable motion for high volume applications.
- Incorporate design for safety, design for maintenance and design for manufacturing best practices.
- Select, size and integrate electrical and electromechanical components such as servos, sensors, controllers, vision systems / sensors, robots, etc.
- Retrofit actuators and sensors on current deployed equipment to improve safety and reliability.
- Support maintenance and sustaining teams in troubleshooting difficult equipment failures.
- Participate in supplier and equipment buyoffs.
- Own the designs from cradle to grave and be responsible for their technical success.
Minimum Qualifications :
- 5+ years of experience of hands-on Automation design and commissioning.
- Has demonstrated proficiency in Equipment design integrating multiple axis motion, electrical and pneumatic actuators and various type of analog and digital sensors.
- Has created CAD packages and detailed drawings.
- Experience with SolidWorks electrical preferred.
- Has demonstrated ability to complete multiple projects within time and budget.
- Has demonstrated ability to work in a team environment as well as an individual contributor.
- Has demonstrated ability to communicate technically both orally and in writing.
- With minimal supervision, demonstrated the ability to debug and solve practical problems.
Preferred Qualifications :
- 7+ years of experience as a hands-on Mechanical design.
- Has Demonstrated excellence in equipment design and commissioning.
- Has successfully deployed complex high volume production solutions.
- Has demonstrated proficiency in GD&T and design best practices.
- Basic experience with machine shop equipment, measuring tools & gages, hand tools, etc.
Education
- Associate of Arts or Science degree in Electronic Engineering field highly desirable.
- Certification in Solidworks or equivalent CAD Software is a plus.
- Minimum 2 years on-the-job training is acceptable in lieu of formal educational degree.
Compensation : The anticipated range for this position is $93,000 - $125,000. Actual placement within the range is dependent on multiple factors, including but not limited to skills, education, and experience.
