Job Description / Summary :

The Director, Department of Diagnostic Imaging, is a leader of the management team, whose primary responsibilities are to develop, communicate, and implement strategic, operational, programmatic plans and policies to achieve the mission, vision, and values of UCSF BCH Oakland.

The Director is responsible for the non-physician planning, directing, implementing, organizing, controlling, and improving services pertaining to the technical operations, financial performance, and administrative operations of Diagnostic Imaging to meet the patient care, fiscal, research, teaching, and philanthropic needs of the hospital.

The Department of Radiology performs exams at multiple inpatient and outpatient locations. Provided modalities include radiography and fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and molecular imaging, and interventional radiology.

The Director reports directly to the Vice President of Ancillary & Support Services and closely collaborates with the Radiologist-in-Chief.

The Director will partner with the Vice President of Ancillary & Support Services, Radiologist-in-Chief, and other institutional leaders in ongoing growth strategy planning with successful execution.

Essential Functions :

Strategic Planning

  • Provide leadership, management and direction for the operations and business functions of the Department of Radiology, including radiology professional practice plan, at UCSF BCH Oakland supporting clinical care, academic and research activities.
  • Develop, implement, and execute delivery of 5-year strategic plan for the department including clinical, educational, and research areas that align with and support institutional strategy.
  • Ensure alignment with the organization s strategic goals and agility in support of institutional goals.

Leadership

  • Influence, support and represent organizational initiatives, philosophies and values through communication and aligned actions.
  • Work collaboratively with the staff and leadership teams; this includes partnerships between faculty, operations, research, and patient services.
  • Represent Radiology at all levels of the institution, as well as to outside partners.
  • Demonstrate a passion and excellence for leading and inspiring teams.

Budget / Financial Management

  • Responsible for annual operating budget and operating expenses.
  • Oversee annual capital budgeting and expenditures to support the Department of Radiology; this includes supporting extramural funding opportunities.
  • Plan clinical and business strategies and market associated programs to grow overall business operations.

Human Resources / People Management

  • Direct a team of 100 employees spanning a variety of functions including business and finance, allied health, quality improvement and compliance, research professionals and administrative support.
  • Build world-class teams in all areas of responsibility and ensuring recruitment and retention of staff whose values and attributes are congruent with the mission and vision of UCSF BCH Oakland.
  • Coaching and mentoring others, helping to ensure appropriate resources are available to achieve goals, providing constructive feedback and leading / serving on hospital committees.

Patient Access, Satisfaction, Quality, and Safety

  • Oversee, monitor, and optimize patient access to clinical care.
  • Create a culture that promotes patient, family, and staff safety.
  • Monitor performance against access targets and physician standards for scheduling and wait times.
  • Develop and implement improvement interventions when warranted.
  • Working with quality improvement drivers lead to continuously improving patient access and flow, service effectiveness, patient safety, and satisfaction.

Additional Responsibilities :

  • Actively participates in continued professional growth by continuing education and involvement in professional organizations.
  • Identifies organizational and staff development needs. Participates in development of policies to address these needs.
  • Promotes positive relations between self, staff, and radiologists.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory / Management Responsibilities :

  • Performs duties in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision or direction.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of, and consistent adherence to, hospital policies and procedures, promoting same to all staff members.

Financial Responsibilities :

  • Collaborates with the development of annual capital and operating budget to ensure current needs and anticipated changes are addressed.
  • Administers departmental budgets within allocation, adjusted for volume.
  • Administers departmental budgets within budgeted FTEs adjusted for volume. Ensures staffing reflects workload.
  • Prepares productivity and budget performance reports and assists managers with corrective action plan on a regular basis, minimally once a month.
  • Mentors division managers in the areas of budget development / interpretation.
  • Develops and manages operations and capital budget(s) including effective use of materials and services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective verbal and written skills.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement Team experience.
  • Membership in AHRA, ASRT and CSRT preferred.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and PACs.

Minimum Education :

  • Undergraduate degree required (radiology, management, business administration, public administration, etc).
  • Graduate degree required. (e.g., Master s degree in business or health administration)
  • Evidence of continuing education in the Science of Radiologic Technology and in the field of Radiology Management.

Minimum Experience :

  • Minimum 5 years management experience at a full-service hospital.
  • Working knowledge of PACs system. Develops PACs and RIS programs, protocols, and technologies including EMR recommendations pertaining to Imaging.

License Required :

  • Certification from the State of California as a Radiologic Technologist (CRT) preferred.
  • ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) preferred.

Certification Required :

  • BLS required.
  • CRA credential (Certified Radiology Administrator) preferred.
  • LEAN, Six Sigma, other preferred.

Reach : Up to 3 hours

Rep Use of UE / Grasp : Up to 8 hrs

Lift / Push / Pull : 15 lbs

This job requires the ability to hear alarms clients and / or instruction. The ability to see accurately from 20 inches to 20-ft.
