Commentary Editor for Leading National Security Media Outlet

War on the Rocks , the flagship publication of Metamorphic Media , is looking for a detail-oriented, full-time editor who is committed to the clear communication of important ideas about international security.

Please note this is not a remote position. We have a hybrid schedule of three days in the office a week (T, W, Th). As such, we will only consider candidates who live in the Washington, DC metro area or who are willing to relocate there.

The Position

Our editors are responsible for stewarding and editing commentary articles, which play an important role in thought leadership in the national security community.

Most of our authors are current / former military personnel, civilian national security practitioners, government officials, scholars, or in the defense industry.

Whomever we hire will work closely with other members of our editorial team. Please note that we are looking for candidates with a background in national security.

This position is not a good fit for people who have worked primarily in journalism.

Requirements

• Minimum of two years of editorial experience. This does not mean you need to have been employed as an editor, but you should be able to demonstrate that a past position has involved serious and sustained wordsmithing
• Deep familiarity with defense and foreign policy issues, as demonstrated by a minimum of four years of professional experience ( not inclusive of graduate education or internships)
• Exceptional and obsessive attention to detail
• Proven track record of delivering against short-term deadlines
• Exceptional and elegant written English
• Ability to work collegially with others, to include difficult personalities (not all authors are a walk in the park, sadly)
• Ability to work flexibly as part of a small team
• Right to work in the United States

Bonus

• Experience in the U.S. armed forces or the Department of Defense
• MA or other advances degree in international relations, strategic studies, military science, or a related topic
