Overview

Halifax Health is seeking an Imaging Intern Tech Assistant-IR and Cath Lab for the Radiology / Cath Lab.

Summary

The position is a non-professional health care employee, functioning under the direct supervision of a registered technologist.

Must be accepted in an accredited Radiologic Technology program. Senior year students preferred. This position serves as a Cardiology and Interventional Radiology Department liaison to assure prompt professional service.

Position will be required to perform general patient care duties, prep imaging rooms prior to exam, keep supplies adequately stocked, transport, and business services.

Handles patient communication in a professional manner and appropriate to patient age, condition and cultural needs. Provide patient care and follow up appropriate to more than one area as assigned.

Demonstrate all necessary skills and knowledge of computers and / or equipment technology in the Department of Cardiology and Interventional Radiology including but not limited to Merge, PACS and HIS (Meditech).

Knowledge of State and JCAHO regulations are a must and you are expected to be familiar with the current Patient Safety Goals and the hospitals current core measures.

Job Qualifications

Formal

Education :

High School diploma or equivalent. Previous health care experience.

Certification

Licensure :

BLS / CPR for health care provider in adult, child, and pediatrics.

Related

Experience :

Medical terminology college level course, basic anatomy and physiology college level course, computer literacy, general knowledge of various Radiology procedures and preps, aseptic / isolation techniques, and other health care related courses.

Senior level in an accredited School for Radiologic Science.

Other Skills

and Abilities :

Participate in procedure room and patient prep, may work alongside a licensed technologist during sterile procedures. Understand and follow sterile procedure guidelines pre and post procedure.

Professional communication skills are required. Ability to follow oral / written instructions, trouble shoot and think logically in stressful or problem solving situations.

Must be able to handle fast paced environment while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor. Thorough knowledge of various Cardiac Cath and Interventional Radiology procedural set ups.

Ability to function as a team member with flexibility while handling numerous tasks simultaneously. Ability to lift and transport patients as required.

Restrictions :

Will not position patient / imaging equipment or make radiation exposure. Will not perform venipuncture. Will not administer radiopharmaceuticals or medications.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

RESPONSIBLITIES AND STANDARDS

ASSIGNED MODALITIES

Patient Care

Serves as a liaison to assure prompt professional service.

Greets patients as they arrive or while in transport to the Radiology Department. Ensures each patient is comfortable and informs patients that a Technologist will be right with them.

Patient Scheduling :

Answers patient’s questions and assists with patient scheduling as required. Assures efficient throughput and productivity in assisting nuclear medicine technologist while assuring quality patient care.

Appropriate communication and professional attitude is main tained at all times while dealing with patients, physicians’ offices, personnel and hospital employees.

Patient scheduling assures quality patient care as well as efficiency as directed by the Department and Radiologists.

Transport

Transports patients as needed.

Provides safe and efficient transport of patients and ensures that hand off communication is both obtained and provided.

Technologist Assistance

Assists register technologist in general patient care and observation. Performs other duties as assigned.

Assists with moving / dressing patients and assist registered tech with procedures. Observes patients during procedures and reports any changes in condition to register technologist.

Stays with patients when registered technologist is performing image critique. Performs BLS / CPR as needed. Assignments are performed as specified.

Clerical Duties

Answers phones, delivers messages and assures patient confidentiality while communicating in a professional manner. Greets patients, enters orders and dispatches request in a timely manner.

Retrieves, distributes and scans patient records in an accurate / timely manner while assuring patient confidentiality. Communicates in a professional manner, provides efficient handling of department and outside communications.

Room Setup and cleaning

Prepares imaging / procedure rooms prior to procedures under the supervision of a Radiologic technologist. Room set up for procedure is accurate and timely.

Computer knowledge and skill is demonstrated. Maintains adequate stock of supplies and equipment in assigned room or area.

Room set up is performed as directed. Adequate stock / supplies are maintained. Demonstrates post procedure room cleaning, as defined by environment cleaning of patient care areas Procedural areas policy.

Records and Documentation

Ensure that the Technologist have filled in and initialed all appropriate information on patient documentation prior to scanning.

Performs required PACS and office / clerical duties and procedure documentation.

All documentation and appropriate information is recorded and scanned into PACS as required by HMC, Department of Radiology and Radiologists.

Clerical duties are completed as assigned. Documentation is neat, accurate and complete.

Continuing Education / Meetings

Attends departmental meetings as required and participates in develop mental / continuing education meetings to maintain and improve skills.

Continually updates education as required by HMC / JCAHO / OSHA etc. standards.

Maintains specialty certification such BLS, Emergency Preparedness, etc.

Maintains knowledge of radiation safety hazards and HAZMAT training.

Actively participates in departmental and medical center mandatory educational opportunities. Actively pursues mandatory and developmental continuing educa tion to meet HMC, OSHA, and JCAHO requirements for licensure, certification, accreditation and skills updates.

Certification is maintained in specialty, BLS, Emergency Preparedness, etc. Skills and competency levels are continually updated within required time frame.
