Job Overview

The Associate Director of Student Engagement oversees the management and advising of co-curricular educational opportunities for students engaged in 200+ student organizations.

  • They participate in the leadership of the department by supervising Program Coordinators, an Administrative Assistant, and graduate student assistant(s);
  • support practical budget administration for 200+ student organizations, including financial transaction reconciliation, financial training, and account reconciliation;

and act as the office technology liaison for the campus engagement online platform.

As well, they lead university efforts to educate student leaders on hazing prevention and education, and collaborates with colleagues to coordinate response to reports of hazing;

and oversee student organization compliance with university policies, including Bystander Education, Student Organization Standards and a wide variety of financial policies.

The Associate Director develops and administers policies for student organizations and their members; trains and advises student leaders;

and provides programming and technology support for more than 200 student organizations, including the Council of Advisory Boards, the Lecture Fund, and the Student Activities Commission.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting directly to the Director of Student Engagement, the Associate Director supervises the Program Coordinators, Administrative Assistant and Graduate Student Assistant(s), who comprise a team that makes up the core of the advising structure for Georgetown’s 200+ student organizations and lead cross-university efforts to standardize and practice student organization advising.

They provide direct advising of several high profile, high risk student organizations that require complex management, programming and communication skills, including the Lecture Fund, the Council of Advisory Boards, and the Student Activities Commission.

These groups routinely encounter educational and philosophical issues centered on critical matters in higher education, such as upholding principles of free speech and expression, developing community in healthy ways, and addressing problems characteristic of student organizations including hazing, misuse of alcohol, and unhealthy organizational culture.

The Associate Director takes an educational approach to advising students through difficult, sensitive and public situations.

A highly motivated, self-starter, and an effective communicator, they routinely work nights and weekends during heavy programming and training seasons and to cover weekly board meetings.

The Associate Director assists the Director in managing a fast paced, unpredictable environment while maintaining an educational focus;

upholds clear standard procedures and policies; and supervises and coaches subordinate staff to exercise independent thinking and judgment.

The Associate Director necessarily exercises strong communication skills and a high degree of discretion regarding sensitive matters of student decision making and leadership behavior.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree - for Master’s degree in higher education or related field
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant, progressively responsible leadership within Student Engagement or Campus Life, including in a student engagement / student activities office
  • Supervisory experience and record of experience with administration, knowledge of student development theory, and legal issues
  • Management experience of significant financial and human resources
  • Availability and flexibility for night and weekend coverage

Pay Range :

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is :

$47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
