GENERAL-PURPOSE

Protecting people and property by preventing crime; enforcing laws; apprehending suspects; monitoring traffic; keeping the peace;

always while valuing community partnerships with empathy and compassion.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Apprehends suspects as needed by responding to complaints and calls for help; observing violations; making arrests. Determines when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.

Exercises independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.

Prevents crime by explaining and enforcing applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; mediating disputes;

patrolling assigned area; responding to notices of disturbances; conducting searches; observing suspicious activities; detaining suspects.

Upholds the constitutional right of all individuals.

  • Conducts criminal investigations by gathering evidence, and interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects. Protects victims and makes arrests of offenders as needed.
  • Apprehends fleeing suspects and performs rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting a law enforcement patrol vehicle;
  • running, lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling oneself up over obstacles; jumping down from elevated surfaces;

climbing through openings; jumping over obstacles, ditches, and streams; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces, and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.

  • Loads, unloads, aims, and fires, from a variety of body positions, a handgun, rifle, and other agency firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards.
  • Maintains operations by following department policies and procedures and recommending changes.
  • Writes and files crime case reports, arrest reports, complaint reports, and traffic accident reports for each case handled during the shift;

issues tickets to traffic violators and testifies in court.

  • Fulfills court orders by serving warrants and commitments.
  • Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations, affidavits, and warrants.
  • Maintains safe traffic conditions by monitoring and directing traffic; enforcing laws and ordinances; investigating accidents;

providing escort; reporting unsafe streets and facilities.

  • Minimizes personal injury by rescuing and reviving victims, and radioing for medical assistance.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by practicing use; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions;

troubleshooting malfunctions; notifying supervisor of needed repairs; evaluating new equipment and techniques.

Maintains professional and technical knowledge by studying applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; attending educational workshops;

reviewing professional publications; practicing skills; participating in professional societies.

  • Conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience :

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent degree.
  • Certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Utah Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) as defined in Section 53-13 of the Utah Code Annotated.

Or, certified as a Law Enforcement Officer certified out of state but can successfully obtain a waiver from Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training.

  • Out-of-state applicants receiving a conditional offer of employment will have to be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Utah Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) by a pre-determined date set for in the conditional offer of employment.
  • Out-of-state applicants will be required to pass a physical fitness test.
  • Vertical Jump (17.5 inches)
  • Sit-Ups (29 Reps-One Minute)
  • Push-Ups (21 Reps -Maximum repetitions with no time constraint and no rest during this phase of the test)
  • 1.5 Mile Run (14 : 46)
  • The procedure and order for testing are recommended as follows :
  • Warm up for 3 minutes; perform the Vertical Jump test and rest for 2 minutes.
  • Perform the One Minute Sit-Up test and rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Perform the Maximum Push Up test, then rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Do the cardio-warm up for 2 to 3 minutes, then perform the 1.5 Mile Run and cardio-cool down for 5 minutes.

Certifications / Licenses :

  • Valid Utah Driver License
  • Maintain 40-hour POST-in-service training minimum.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.

  • Must be at least 21yrs old.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and driving record check.
  • Any newly certified or certifiable applicants will be required to pass a mental health evaluation. Mental health evaluations will not be required by lateral transfers.
  • Must have no felony or domestic violence convictions or crimes of similar moral turpitude.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate through all levels of the City.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft systems including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to present information in front of high-level Police officials.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in the English language both orally and written.
  • Maintain proper fit for duty physical requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting.
  • Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential in the performance of daily tasks.
  • Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity exist.
  • Mental application utilizes memory for details; verbal instructions, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking.
  • Highly stressful life-and-death situations that require mental fortitude and the ability to thrive under intense situations.
