The Times isseeking aversatile and experienced journalist and technologist to join a team focused on innovation in visual journalism from the Photo department.

You will be part of a team responsible for envisioning the future expressions and formats for our visual journalism, and for developing the training and workflows to build those plans.

You will join the leadership team in the Photo department, and your role will be to inspire, train and support our staff in developing their skills and experimenting with new approaches.

Your work will showcase The Times’s unrivaled photo and video journalism and will highlight the work and expertise of our journalists and visual journalists in the field.

You will oversee the collaboration of photographers on assignment, photo editors across many desks, and visual editors across our Photo and Video desks to generate, direct and coordinate the assignment, production and publishing of pieces in a variety of formats, including linear video.

You will develop, implement and ensure adherence to streamlined workflow and filing protocol for photo and video assignments, clarifying opportunities and processes for photojournalists gathering video and audio and working with mobile display and new formats in mind.

You will report to a deputy editor on Photo.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities :

Solicit, develop and field pitches from desk photo editors and photographers for visual stories. Determine whether and when visual pieces are published, and identify the most suitable presentation format.

Direct the work of desk editors, photographers and other photo editors, and collaborate with editors in the Reporter Video unit to coordinate video that highlights the work and expertise of our journalists and visual journalists in the field.

Be a part of the Photo leadership team that works with other senior leaders in Video, Digital Design and Product developing and experimenting with cutting-edge visual presentations incorporating photo, video, text and audio with various surfaces and platforms in mind.

Regularly top edit, produce and publish visual stories, particularly as we pilot new formats. This may include interviews, as well as writing and editing captions and text.

Develop, implement and document workflows and training materials for editors and photographers.

Deliver 1 : 1 and small group training sessions on best practices for assigning, shooting, reporting and editing various multimedia presentations.

You will be responsible for keeping a library of these training materials updated and maintained.

Supervise and give feedback to editors in editing, sequencing and producing multimedia pieces in a variety of formats, with the goal of ultimately empowering them to work independently in end to end creation of said formats.

Undertake in-the-field editorial work on occasion as needed to pilot workflows and explore formats.

Ensure the integrity and credibility of our journalism, ensuring the avoidance of conflicts of interest, maintaining accuracy and quality, and safeguarding The Times’s reputation for independence, fairness and impartiality.

Basic Qualifications :

5+ years of experience as a visual editor or visual journalist in a newsroom or equivalent

Familiarity with collecting and editing photo, audio and video

Substantial knowledge of a wide array of photographic equipment, image handling and editing software and workflows.

Excellent interviewing, reporting and writing skills

A history of innovation regarding the visual representation of journalism, expressed in a portfolio of work.

Experience delivering high quality visual work on deadline

Preferred Qualifications :

Thoughtful technical skills and a facility for learning new technologies

Experience with visual storytelling and breaking news, feature and enterprise journalism.

Comfortable managing projects on a variety of timelines.

Comfort level with group training and delivering presentations to a variety of audiences

Willingness to work nights and weekends responding to breaking news.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $140,000.00 and $160,000.00.
