Research Computing Consultant
Office of Information Technology
Working with Brown University Office of Information Technology User Support and Systems Groups within the Center for Computation and Visualization (CCV), the Research Computing Consultant is responsible for providing technical support for Brown researchers and their collaborators.
This includes installing, debugging and maintaining domain specific scientific applications, and understanding best use practices needed to take full advantage of the University’s high performance computing (HPC) resources, research storage systems, and secure computing enclave.
The Research Computing Consultant is also responsible for teaching users to effectively use the shared computing platform, its scheduling system, and its high performance data storage systems.
The incumbent will also write clear and concise web documentation for the Center’s users. The Research Computing Consultant participates in a 24 / 7 on-call rotation.
Job Qualifications
Bachelors in Computer Science or STEM field required. Master / PhD degree in STEM field preferred
3 - 5 years of IT related experience
Exceptionally strong background in Linux / Unix
Experience with a variety of build and installation tools (e.g. CMake, Makefile, scons, autoconf)
Experience with building, configuring and deploying complex research software (R, MatLab, etc)
Software development experience using technical computing languages (e.g. C, C++, Fortran, Julia)
Scripting language experience (e.g. bash, Python)
Experience using and supporting High Performance Computing and parallel systems
Experience supporting a highly secure storage and computing environment for sensitive data
Experience with cloud technologies including : AWS, Azure, GCP
Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Singularity)
Experience with version control technology (e.g., Git)
Experience with remote desktop services such as VNC and FastX
Experience working in teams on multiple projects
Demonstrated ability to work with groups having varied levels of technical sophistication
Experience with GPU programming (e.g., CUDA, OpenCL)
Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)
Experience with distributed programming frameworks (e.g., MPI)
Experience with Jupyter Hub
Experience with Globus Platform
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong problem-solving skills
Experience creating technical documentation
Demonstrates a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
Successful completion of a criminal background check and education verification is required.
