About the Job

We are seeking a paralegal to work in a law school clinic setting for the summer. In this role, you will provide critical support in preparing cases for immigration hearings, filings before a government agency, including forms and gathering of supporting evidence, and communication with clients.

Responsibilities :

  • Conduct interviews with clients to gather case information
  • Prepare forms and immigration applications / petitions
  • Gather supporting documentation and ensure completeness of case files
  • Perform legal research on immigration laws, regulations, and procedures
  • Draft correspondence and other documents as needed
  • Maintain organized case files and use case management software

This is a temporary, part-time position starting on June 1, 2024, lasting through August 30, 2025, for about 10-14 hours a week.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications :

  • Paralegal certificate
  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage deadlines
  • Proficiency with Lexis and Westlaw.
  • Experience using case management software and maintenance of files.

Preferred Qualifications :

Experience working with justice-impacted individuals is a plus.

The University of Minnesota Law School's James H. Binger Center for New Americans expands urgently needed legal services for noncitizens, pursues litigation to improve our nation's immigration laws, and supports noncitizens in the region through education and community outreach.

Designed in partnership with leading area law firms and non-profit immigration legal services, the Center is the only program of its kind in the U.

S. and is home to three dynamic clinics and an integrated education and outreach program that offer students hands-on educational experiences
