Role description :

Arcadis is currently seeking a highly motivated Protection & Control Relay Engineer to join our Power Delivery team.

This is a mid-level engineering position with a potential career growth to senior level within the Power Delivery unit of Arcadis.

The position requires candidate to work within a multi-disciplinary team for the protection and control design and relay setting of transmission and distribution substation.

He / she will participate in substation protection and relay control design and settings at all stages of project development, including concept, pre-feasibility, feasibility, detail design, procurement, and construction.

Protection and control relay engineer will have the opportunity to design and perform relay setting of substation and transmission projects for electric utilities and developers at voltages from 12kV up to kV.

This is an exciting and growing field in the power systems industry and allows candidates to get exposure to how the power generation such as that of renewable energy ties into the electric system.

Candidates will be expected to use knowledge of digital logic design, AC and DC circuits to design substation electrical projects.

Role accountabilities :

This position will also coordinate design activities, with design activities undertaken by other engineering disciplines, to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion.

The Protection & Control Relay Engineer may take on project management roles, coordinating the activities of substation electrical, RTU / SCADA / Telecom, civil, structural and other engineering and non-engineering disciplines.

Protection and Control Relay engineer will also participate in the preparation of project estimates, engineering estimates and proposals, and client engagement and activities.

This position is accountable to provide design activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all of Arcadiss policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.

The incumbent will also work closely with other Power Delivery departments, including the Substation Engineering, Transmission Engineering, RTU / SCADA / Automation, Distribution and EV Technology and the Renewables teams, as well as with other Arcadis divisions on related Protection and Control Relay design & settings and power sector master plans.

  • Works within a multi-discipline team to develop and / or review efficient and reliable electrical design packages for medium and high voltage substations.
  • Performs design studies and demonstrate a good working knowledge of relay protections involving logic diagrams, calculations report, relay and coordination studies, power system calculations, including short circuit calculation, and ratio selection, over-current element coordination, zone-distance element selection, and relay load ability calculation.
  • Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design for the projects.
  • Coordinates design activities to maintain project schedules, budget, quality requirements to ensure successful project completion While delivering accurate and thorough electrical designs that will meet industry standard specifications and meet prudent engineering practices.
  • Maintains complete project documentation with respect to relay settings, engineering studies and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
  • Responsible for design and relay setting of protection schemes for all kinds of T&D substations, Industrial, Solar and Wind, BESS applications.
  • Perform power system load flow studies, fault studies, relay setting coordination, transient studies, drawings, specifications, and perform condition assessments and feasibility studies.
  • Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to SCADA engineers, substation physical engineers, and control design staff in order to fully develop system integration of protection, control, and monitoring systems.

Work with team to meet project specifications, cost control, and schedule objectives. Resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.

Additionally, this position may involve travel of up to 25% to client sites and customer meetings, both within North America and potentially internationally.

Qualifications & Experience :

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 6 years of professional experience focused on the development of protection philosophies, and relay settings development.
  • Experience in relay setting calculations and coordination of Intelligent Electronic Devices and Numerical Relays.
  • Experience with CAPE or equivalent software program (AcSELerator, ASPEN)
