Job Description Summary

The Director is a 12-month position in the central office of Residence Life and Housing. The Director works closely with other professionals in the department in the administration and management of a comprehensive residence life and housing program serving over 4,000 students.

The Forest program is foundational to the residential experience with a broad-reaching arm through the residential experience of all Wake Forest students.

The director will oversee all residential academic initiatives to create a vibrant and supportive learning and living environment for all residential students.

The director will work closely with the residential life staff, the Director of the Faculty Fellows Program, Director of Orientation and New Student and Transition Programs, and a broader team within Wake Forest to advance The Forest’s goals for all residential student development and engagement

Job Description

Essential Functions :

Directly supervises the Assistant Director of Residential Care and Conduct, Assistant Director of Staff Selection, Recruitment, and Leadership, Assistant Director of Residential Engagement and Academic Initiatives, Staff Training and Development Manager, and Program Manager of The Forest.

Significant responsibility for ensuring the success of The Forest initiatives, including expanding learning to enhance the academic and social integration of first-year students into college life.

Advances the goals of The Forest, outlines a continuing vision and assessment process for the program, and engages in frequent, collaborative interactions with faculty and staff partners, residence life and housing staff, faculty fellows, and students residing in the seven houses.

Provides indirect supervision of the Community Directors, Graduate Hall Directors, and Resident Advisers who serve our residential communities.

The Director is primarily responsible for the day-to-day management of The Forest initiative, setting direction and making decisions to advance the success of the program.

Monitor house-based initiatives and programming for goal alignment and consistency.

Together with the Director of the Faculty Fellows Program, partner with faculty in promoting academic and intellectual engagement in The Forest.

Provide strategic direction and leadership in development and implementation of the mission, vision and goals of The Forest.

Oversee budgeting and resource allocation for The Forest and other academic programmatic initiatives.

Regularly engage in collaborative interactions with house leadership, residence life and housing staff, faculty and staff affiliates, residential fellows, and students residing within The Forest.

Other Functions :

In conjunction with the Executive Director;

Coordinates and manages long range planning endeavors.

Directs and coordinates new departmental programs and initiatives.

Lead the recruitment, selection and training of professional staff which includes developing and providing ongoing opportunities for professional development / growth.

Manage the operational budget for the Residence Life unit

Together with the Assistant Director, Academic Initiatives, coordinates the CNS 353 College Student Development, a preparatory class for new Resident Advisers.

Collaborate with the Housing Operations team in the management, oversight and training of opening and closing for the residential communities, occupancy verification and lease agreements for on campus staff apartments.

Responsible for coordinating resources and directing response during community and / or individual student crisis situations.

Serve as an administrative hearing officer for the department as necessary. Adjudicates administrative hearings related to violations of the WFU housing agreement.

Responsible for monitoring and ensuring compliance with federal and state guidelines, including Title IX, ADA, Clery, FHA, and OCR.

Consults and provides mediation to parents and students on student development issues and college policies.

Fulfill central office duty on a rotating basis as assigned during the academic year and weekly duty during the summer months.

Other :

Residence Life and Housing provides optional housing to staff who serve in a Residence Life and Housing on-call response capacity.

Eligible staff who elect the option to live in apartments and / or houses provided by RL&H agree to additional responsibilities that increase connection with the student residential experience, responsiveness to campus-related emergencies, and other campus programs and services.

Additional responsibilities associated with that function include :

Respond on-site as directed for crisis response, including but not limited to weather-related, student, and facility emergencies.

Provide on-site support to the Administrator on Call, as directed.

Provide program support as directed.

Perform regular on-campus facility walk-throughs, reporting issues to Facilities and Campus Services for follow-up.

Support weekend and evening processes (e.g., closing) as directed.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities :

Master's degree in student affairs, higher education administration, or related field with 5+ years of full-time, progressive work experience in residence life and housing or student affairs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Demonstrated ability in program development, management, and assessment.

Experience in planning and implementing meaningful learning experiences with faculty and students.

Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of concepts of college student development.

Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse campus community and foster inclusivity pertaining to diversity education.

Ability to communicate with a variety of constituents, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to articulate the role that residence halls play in supporting retention and the overall academic mission of the University.

Ability to problem solve, critically think and analyze complex issues while effectively planning and organizing work.

Ability to work well under pressure with multiple and changing deadlines

Ability to organize workflow and coordinate projects within the office and with other departments.

Ability to interpret policy and procedures established within the Office of Residence Life and Housing.

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy

Ability to work weekends and evenings as assigned.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities :

Knowledge of and interest in the development of a residential living and learning community.

Experience in supervision and management of a professional, paraprofessional, and student staff.

Knowledge of current as well as emergent issues facing college students.

Skill and commitment to providing leadership in a diverse and multicultural environment.

While this position is not required to live in University-provided housing, it is encouraged. The proximity to campus increases connection with the student residential experience, responsiveness to campus-related emergencies, and other campus programs and services.

Accountabilities :

The position has budget authority for all non-personnel accounts in Residence Life and Housing.
