Job Summary

Utilizes advanced advising knowledge, theory, and practical experience to serve as an academic liaison for students to identify academic and career goals, select appropriate courses, and plan for degree attainment.

Manages small to medium-sized, moderately complex projects.

Essential Functions

The Academic Advisor advises and assists new first-year engineering students and continuing undeclared engineering students in academic decision-making and related activities, helping to facilitate a successful academic transition from high school to college and secondarily, to a major department at the end of the first-year.

The incumbent assists students with the selection and registration of appropriate courses, advises students on first-year program requirements, provides information to students about SSOE degree requirements, and clarifies information for students about SSOE and University policies / procedures.

Advisor participates in summer registration and Orientation programming, fall scheduling and registration for spring, and transition programming / planning during department selection activities in the spring term.

Academic Advisor works with students who are academically at risk and who may need special advising intervention or programming.

Advisor makes referrals to campus resources within and external to the SSOE. Primary contact with students occurs through walk-in and scheduled appointments and Freshman Engineering Seminar.

Academic advisor teaches multiple sections of Freshman Engineering Seminar, interacting with all advisees weekly through this course.

The academic advisor uses Peoplesoft, Microsoft Office suite, and EAB Navigate daily. Detailed attention to academic record keeping and administrative responsibilities related to advising is critical.

Academic Advisor meets regularly with first-year advising team, immediate supervisor, and other student services staff to plan and implement advising program activities and improvements and to facilitate professional development.

Physical Effort

Mainly sedentary, but attendance at meeting at various campus locations will be necessary. No lifting of heavy objects is required.
