Summary :

Under the supervision of the Director ofPhysical Therapy, the Occupational Therapist has the responsibilityand accountability for assessing, planning, evaluating andimplementing care for the patients assigned occupational therapy.

The Occupational Therapist is responsible for adhering to allstandards of Occupational Therapy Practice Act as they apply toproviding technical therapy care, supplies, equipment andinterventions to a designated patient population.

This positionprovides clinical oversight and assistance of COTA’s who are caringfor one of the Occupational Therapist’s patient.

Per theDepartments Scope of Practice, this position requires providingservices to Therapy Patients, ages between pediatric to geriatricin a manner that demonstrates an understanding of thefunctional / developmental age of the individuals served.

Responsibilities :

ASSESSES THEPHYSICAL, PSYCHO-SOCIAL, SPIRITUAL, CULTURAL, FUNCTIONAL, HIGH RISKAND DISCHARGE NEEDS OF THE PATIENT ANDFAMILY.

  • Completes and documentsinitial assessment / care within required timeframes.
  • Performs,reassessments / care at intervals as required or appropriate to thepatient’s needs.
  • Ensures physicalassessment / care includes all major body systems.
  • Ensures spiritual assessment / careincludes actual / expressed needs.
  • Incorporates cultural and ethnic factorsinto assessment / care.
  • Timely reporting ofweekly progress in interdisciplinary staffing and outcomemeasures.
  • Establishes presence ofconsent / order prior totreatment / procedure.
  • DEMONSTRATESTHE ABILITY TO ACCURATELY ACCESS AND DOCUMENT STAFFING, PATIENTCARE ACTIVITIES AND HOSPITALPROCESSES.
  • Uses computer system(s)appropriately.
  • Documents in the medicalrecord according to policy / procedure.
  • Documents daily and weekly progressnotes, cosigns for COTA's under theirsupervision.
  • Daily charges / log will beturned in within 24 hours of providingtherapy.
  • Does charges on the computerprior to leaving work each day.
  • Completesdocumentation of evaluations within 72 hours after admit anddischarge summary within 5 days of discharge
  • OBTAINS KNOWLEDGE OF, AND DEMONSTRATESCOMPLIANCE WITH INFECTION CONTROL POLICIES ANDPROCEDURES.
  • Practices StandardPrecautions in patient care activities.
  • Practices appropriate disease specificisolation as required.
  • Appropriatelyhandles and disposes of sharps.
  • Demonstrates good handwashing

Complies withFOAM IN / FOAM OUT of all patientrooms

  • Complies with thefingernail policy
  • Wears PPE whenapplicable.
  • PROVIDES FOR THEEDUCATION / TRAINING OF THEPATIENT / FAMILY
  • Identifies and documentspatient / family educational needs upon initial assessment andthereafter.
  • Identifies barriers tolearning.
  • Provides and documentsteaching based on identifiedneeds.
  • Teaches at a level ofunderstanding related to the pt / family member’s level ofeducation.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness ofinstruction provided.
  • Assessment,teaching and incorporates cultural and ethnic factors.
  • Assessment, teaching and incorporatesfunctional needs.
  • OVERSEES PATIENTCARE ON BASIS OF PATIENT CLASSIFICATION AND STAFF EXPERTISE TOENSURE QUALITY OF CARE.
  • Initiates theassessment of patient within 24 hours ofconsult.
  • Demonstrates empathetic andpositive attitude when working withpatients.
  • Conducts chart audits foraccuracy and adequate documentation asdirected
  • Visits and interviews patientand communicates with families when present ornecessary.
  • Re-evaluates and modifies theplan of care, based on the patient’s response to theinterventions.
  • Ensures properorientation of new therapyassociates.
  • Ensures competencies andlicensure are current.
  • Appropriatelycoordinates and / or delegates responsibilities to technical support.
  • Assist in supervising and monitoringcompliance of duties assigned to the techs and / or COTAs.
  • Takes appropriate action to addressissues.
  • Demonstrates sound clinicaljudgment in decision-making regarding patientcare.
  • PROVIDES FOR THE PLAN FOR THERAPY CAREINTO THE INTERDISCIPLINARY CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF THEPATIENT / FAMILY.
  • Communicates effectivelywith associates, physicians and allied health team.
  • Coordinates ADL program and therapy carewith other disciplines involved, and with any COTAs or techs theyare supervising.
  • Involves other healthteam members, as necessary.
  • Activelyparticipates in 50% of departmental in-services and meets withmanager for information missed in other meetings as documented onsign in sheet (attendance is for full- time associates, reliefassociates may read the minutes).
  • ASSURESTHE RIGHTS OF THE PATIENT / FAMILY ARE RESPECTED ANDMAINTAINED.
  • Allows for privacy andmodesty in the provision of care.
  • Identifies self by name and title topatient / family.
  • Utilizes AIDET wheninteracting with patients
  • Reportssuspected cases of abuse / neglect, if identified.
  • Understands role of, and how to access,the Ethics Committee.
  • DEMONSTRATESKNOWLEDGE OF UNIT SPECIFIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES AND THE ABILITYTO SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY USE UNIT SPECIFIC PATIENT CARE EQUIPMENTIN THE DELIVERY OF QUALITY PATIENTCARE
  • Completes Unit Specific AnnualCompetency Checklist.
  • Obtainsnecessary training prior to initial equipment use.
  • Assures equipment is in operating orderprior to use.

Differentiatesbetween patient complications and equipment malfunction.

  • Uses medical equipment inaccordance with manufacturer’s operatingguidelines.
  • Participates in performanceimprovement process.

Requirements :

  • Bachelor of Sciencedegree from an accredited Occupational Therapyschool.
  • English required; bilingualpreferred.
  • Excellent written and oralcommunication skills.
  • Rehabilitativeexperience preferred.
  • Certifications inNDT, metronome, Big and Loudpreferred.
  • Current Louisiana OT Licenserequired.
  • Current BLS Cardrequired.
