Internship Summary Ralco Nutrition partners with SMSU in Marshall, MN to conduct microbiology research during the summer months (May – August).
This internship is located at the SMSU Microbiology Laboratory. Interns will be responsible for carrying out microbial assays such as MIC determinations, growth curve analyses, and Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion testing.
Duties will include preparing and sterilizing media, maintaining bacterial cultures in aseptic conditions, and assisting with day-to-day laboratory operations.
Interns will be expected to follow established protocols, maintain accurate records, and contribute to the generation of reliable research data.
Additional tasks may be assigned as needed to support basic microbiology research and associated objectives. We are seeking a motivated intern to join our team and contribute to ongoing projects.
In this role, you will work closely with our staff to support research activities, assist with data collection and analysis, and participate in team meetings where you may be asked to record minutes.
Assignments will be tailored to your field of study and interests, providing opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in a practical setting while gaining valuable professional experience. Our ideal candidates are individuals seeking to gain hands-on experience in microbiology (or associated fields) and are eager to learn and contribute to a team. Ultimately, the role of the Intern is to support the organization’s microbiology-associated projects and activities while gaining broad experience in various aspects of the company. Responsibilities Support staff in day-to-day project tasks and research activities Conduct antimicrobial assays, including MIC determinations, growth curves, and Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion tests Prepare and sterilize media, reagents, and bacterial cultures under aseptic conditions Collect, organize, and accurately report research data Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations for internal or external use Perform administrative tasks as needed to support project workflows Participate in research or team meetings and take minutes when requested Shadow staff across multiple roles to gain exposure to diverse responsibilities Contribute to maintaining lab organization, safety, and general operations Respond to web correspondence, emails, and social media interactions as directed Carry out other duties as assigned in support of basic research and team projects Qualifications Strong interest in developing research and professional skills in a laboratory or office setting Willingness to learn new techniques and take on diverse tasks with a positive attitude Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and balance multiple responsibilities Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with openness to feedback Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all tasks Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team Adaptability and flexibility when faced with new challenges or shifting priorities Professionalism and respectfulness in interactions with colleagues, supervisors, and external partners Self-motivation and curiosity to contribute ideas and ask thoughtful questions Commitment to personal growth and continuous improvement throughout the internship Education Requirements College students (sophomore and above) Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s science or agriculture related degree For further information contact :
