What Your Job Will Be Like :
We are seeking an Intern - Bioscience, R&D Undergrad Year Round
Are you looking for a rewarding research experience? As a Biosciences Intern at Sandia, you are a highly motivated undergraduate student interested in a career in the biosciences, chemistry, biochemistry, and / or biophysics and excited to join a diverse team of scientists to learn and conduct experiments.
In this position you will learn laboratory skills and obtain hands-on experience performing cutting-edge scientific research.
You will work under the mentorship of Sandia technical staff members who will help guide your success. Your project will use state-of-the-art technology for engineering and characterization of cellular properties.
This position is for a year round intern to join our team this spring / summer and continue working throughout the academic year.
On any given day, you may work with a mentor getting hands-on experience that may include :
- Work on site in Livermore CA
- Cell culture (mostly algal), sample collection and phenotyping
- DNA, RNA and protein extraction, cDNA libraries prep
- Molecular assays
- Synthetic biology
- Analyzing and presenting experimental data to the team
Qualifications We Require :
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements :
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
- Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 / 4.0
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- U.S. citizen, asylee, refugee, or lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
Qualifications We Desire :
- Ability to present technical information and effectively collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Ability to work onsite at Sandia in Livermore, CA during the academic year (not just during academic breaks).
- Experience with laboratory work (PCR, immunoassays)
- Fundamental programming knowledge (C++, Python, or Matlab)
- Bioinformatics skills and familiarity with related software tools for analysis of next-generation sequencing, proteomic, and metabolomic data.
- Communication skills combined with the ability to organize and present scientific results
- Completion of entry-level courses in biology, chemistry, or physics
