Description :
Responsible for conducting spiritual needs assessments and provides pastoral care and pastoral counseling for patients of all ages (neonate- geriatrics), families, and staff.
Motivates and invites healthy, meaningful use of each individuals religious beliefs and attitudes in the management of their illness or problem.
Communicates at the direction of leadership with religious leaders and other professionals in the community in order to provide support and to coordinate ongoing pastoral care for patients and families.
Provides counseling and assistance to patients and families for Advance Directives. Responds to spiritual needs of patients, families and staff in emergent and non-emergent settings.
Administers sacraments when requested.
Qualifications : Education :
Education :
High School Diploma or GED required.
Bachelors degree preferred.
Licensure / Certification :
One (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education, or equivalent training in pastoral care, or equivalent training in pastoral care.
Experience :
Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a chaplain, church pastor, pastoral care-giver, or equivalent.
Knowledge, skills, abilities :
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to relate well with clergy of other denominations, patients, administration, staff, and other members of the health care team.
Basic awareness of patient needs and know when to escalate situations to a higher level.
Knowledge of relationship between faith, illness, and the emotional and mental conflicts that may arise.
Ability to motivate and invite healthy, meaningful use of each individuals religious beliefs and attitudes in the management of their illness or problem.
Possesses an understanding of the relationship between faith, illness, and the emotional and mental conflicts that may arise.
Ability to listen, communicate verbally and to communicate in writing and the ability to read documents.
Physical Demands :
The physical ability to respond to patients or their families who may respond to tragedy of death through fainting or violent expression of feelings.
The mental and visual ability to respond to or make decisions in response to a patient or family being upset with certain procedures or treatment as intervention procedures / visitations, etc.
Work Environment :
Works in normal acute care hospital setting with adequate lighting, temperature, and dust control. May be exposed to patients with communicable and infectious diseases;
blood and body fluids; and other secretions and excretions. Also exposed to sharps, chemicals, and small amounts of radiation.
Work may involve stress in dealing with multiple groups working under stress. May be required to work irregular hours and weekends to accommodate multiple shift schedules.
May minister to patients or families who become hostile, violent and unstable.
