Academic Services Officer II / III - Law School

Essential functions (job duties) :

Wayne State University Law School seeks an AcademicServices Officer II / III to serve in the capacity of the Law School’s AssistantDirector of the Office of Career Success.

Reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean of Career Success, this position willassist in developing, coordinating, and implementing bar preparation supportprogramming and services for law students both before and after graduation,including providing individualized counseling services to law students andgraduates on all content-related areas related to bar exam passage.

Theposition will also contribute to coordinating the Law School’s on-campus interviewprogram and will provide Law School student career services to students andgraduates to facilitate employment.

Bar Preparation :

Develop, coordinate, and implement bar preparationsupport programming and services for Law School students both before and aftergraduation.

Provide individual counseling services to Law Schoolstudents on all content-related areas related to bar exam passage including engagingin effective bar exam preparation, essay writing and effective studying andtest-taking skills related to the Multistate Bar Examination, the MultistateProfessional Responsibility Examination, and the Uniform Bar Examination.

Create, conduct, and coordinate workshops and otherprograms for Law School students on topics relevant to bar passage, includingprogramming tailored to the needs of different groups of Law School studentsand graduates (, first-year v.

third-year, part-time / evening v. full-time, recentgraduates, and graduates who failed the applicable bar examination on firstattempt v. multiple attempts).

As needed, identify and refer to the Law School'sAssistant Dean for Student Affairs any students / graduates with character andfitness issues related to admissions to the bar.

Coordinate barpreparation efforts with the Law School’s outside commercial bar preparation company,JD Advising, and the Law School Admissions Office, Law School Office of Student.

Affairs, and Law School faculty to identify currentLaw School students and graduates potentially or currently in need ofindividualized content-related bar exam counseling services.

Maintain up-to-date awareness of applicable barexamination content and bar application requirements, with an emphasis on thedevelopment and status of the NextGen bar exam, the Michigan bar application,the Multistate Bar Examination, and the Multistate Professional ResponsibilityExamination, but also the Uniform Bar Examination and other state specific barexaminations to the extent relevant to current Law School students;

provideappropriate updates as needed to relevant persons within the Law School.

Gather, compile, and report to Dean's Office ongoingand up-to-date statistical data regarding student participation in, and impacton student performance of, all bar-related programming and services, both suchprogramming and services provided by / contracted for by the Law School andexternal programming and services to the extent Law School students / graduatesenroll / participate in such programming and services.

Employment :

Coordinate and advance the Law School's on-campus interviewprogram by developing and maintaining effective hiring relationships with legalemployers to facilitate employment opportunities for students.

Remain current in Michigan and national employment trendsto enhance employment success, particularly as they relate to law firm,judicial clerkship, public interest, and government positions.

Design, develop, and present career-related programs andworkshops to foster student and graduate employment success andprofessionalism.

Assist in collecting graduate and student employment dataand compiling employment reports.

Counsel and advise students about career exploration and thejob search process, provide feedback on student and alumni employmentapplication materials, conduct mock interviews, and connect students withemployers, all with an emphasis on facilitating employment opportunities forLaw School students and alumni in bar admission required or JD advantagepositions.

Design and draft informational guides on a variety ofcareer-related topics for use by students and alumni.

Represent the Office of Career Success at Law School Open Houseevents, Orientation, bar preparation events, and events in the legal community.

Other :

Serve on Law School and University committees asassigned.

Other duties as assigned by the Senior Assistant Deanof Career Success and the Law School Dean's Office related to employment, regulatorycompliance, and bar examination support.

Qualifications :

Juris Doctor degree required from an ABA-accreditedlaw school.

Minimum 1 to 3 years’ experience in higher education in relevant area : careerservices, bar exam preparation, curricular planning, student affairs ordirectly related experience.

Law schoolexperience, particularly in career services or bar preparation strongly preferred.

Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills with theability to multi-task and efficiently prioritize workload.

Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oralcommunication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range ofconstituents within the diverse Law School community, including students,staff, faculty, and administration.

Ability to work effectively with students of varyinglevels of academic preparedness and from diverse populations.

Availability to work occasional evenings weekendshours.

Successful admission to state bar preferred.
