Job Summary

South Mountain Community College is hiring a Head Athletic Coach for Softball

This position will be responsible for the operations of an NJCAA intercollegiate athletic (Softball) program. The coach will oversee recruiting, enforce academic support policies, team practice, competitions, scholarship issuance, compliance, statistic reporting, transfer of student-athletes, manage team budgets, team fundraising, equipment orders and inventory.

The Head Coach will establish positive relationships within the department, campus, district, conference, alumni and community, and supports other teams and programs in the athletic department when applicable.

Essential Functions

25% Plans, manages and implements coaching strategy and practice training sessions for student athletes in accordance with established regulations

25% Organizes, provides for, and oversees the recruitment of prospective student athletes including the evaluation of student athletes in areas of academics, athletic ability and character

10% Plans and manages the overall development of the student athlete including academic success, character building, and team discipline

10% Serves as a program liaison with campus representatives, community service providers, alumni development representatives and others in the promotion of academics and campus / community support partnerships;

Plans and implements athletic promotional programs and related fundraising efforts

10% Oversees and ensures students and programs comply with NJCAA, MCCCD, Region I and ACCAC regulations, policies and procedures

10% Plans and administers assigned budget; monitors program expenditures and budget compliance

10% Performs other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in physical education, sports management, sports coaching or related field, four years of experience as an athletic coach, preferably at the college level, which includes recruiting experience and two years of senior level or lead experience.

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

  • Three years of coaching / teaching experience with softball athletes at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.
  • Master's degree in physical education, sports coaching, sports management, or in any related field
  • Two years of experience coaching at a 2-year college.
  • Two years of demonstrated experience in recruiting student-athletes in the sport of softball.
  • Two years of experience related to enrollment, admissions, advisement, or financial aid of student-athletes at the college level.
  • Two years of experience managing a budget, ordering supplies, and organizing travel.

Special Working Conditions

Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D Driver's License may be required for some assignments.

Positions in this class typically require : stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.

Working Conditions : Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.
