Position Summary
This position plays a critical role ensuring RailWorks meets the highest standards of safety, efficiency, legal, regulatory and policy compliance, all while delivering excellent customer service.
These responsibilities encompass all business unit operations pertaining to safety initiatives, continuous improvement and deliverables for a culture of Safe Production.
Primary / Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Supports and influences operations business units to drive a culture of continuous improvement and Safe Production
- Works proactively and cooperatively with employees, unions, regulators, customers, and other stakeholders to achieve positive results
- Trains and coaches hourly labor, foremen, supervisors and local managers
- Completes audits, observations and inspections in the field, shops, yards, and offices
- Determines safety needs and corrects unsafe procedures, practices and employee behaviors
- Supports operations with documenting unsafe conditions, safety violations, accidents and near misses
- Leads and supports incident investigations to identify root cause(s) and corrective actions and cooperates in the preparation of materials and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations
- Ensures that all required records and reports are complete, accurate and correctly submitted
- Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations with special emphasis on FRA and OSHA requirements, as well as customer requirements
- Inspects jobsites to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determining corrective or preventative action, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented
- Oversees administration related to the company’s Workers’ Compensation program on the specific project
- Participates in and ensures safety committees are effective and meeting as required
- Participates in and administers the RailWorks Drug & Alcohol program on the jobsite
- Participates in data analytics, KPI development, application, and improvements with software solutions such as Microsoft Power BI, Power Apps, etc.
- Assists with corporate safety initiatives, and performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- 4 to 6 years work experience in a heavy labor environment
- MUST have construction industry experience
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to write reports
- Strong computer skills are mandatory, significant experience and abilities with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with OSHA reporting
- Must have excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
- Strong interpersonal skills are necessary; ability to interact and with all levels of the company in field sites, corporate, and customers.
- Must possess the character and unquestionable integrity to represent the Company and provide credibility for all work, reports and analysis that is provided through the safety department
- Must have the ability to grasp facts, processes, procedures in a changing environment very quickly, a quick learner
- Works in a proactive manner, a self-starter who approaches his / her work with a sense of urgency
- Ability to meet deadlines under pressure in short time frames
- Ability to multi-task and thrive in an environment where numerous tasks and projects are occurring simultaneously
- Must possess a valid Driver License
- Must be physically able to wear respiratory protection, climb ladders, work in tunnels, work at heights, work outdoors in both hot and cold conditions and walk remote jobsites.
- Must be able to obtain TWIC Card for access to ports as well as pass other security screenings as determined by our clients.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Frequently sits, stands, walks, reads, writes and uses a computer keyboard.
- When visiting project sites, stands and walks and may climb, balance, stoop, or crouch while negotiating work areas under construction.
- May be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
- May be exposed to loud noise.
- Standing, speaking for relatively long periods of time.
- Up to 100% travel and must have the ability to travel to Canada.
