Position Description
The Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) is seeking a qualified individual to lead the newly created Division of Trauma Anesthesiology.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the flagship hospital the BJC HealthCare system, is ranked among the top hospitals and is a nationally certified Level I Trauma Center with over 4,000 trauma admissions per year.
At 1,100 beds, it is one of the largest hospitals in a multi-state region with a broad catchment area and a significant scope of influence.
The Division of Trauma Anesthesiology is composed of anesthesiology faculty with military, critical care, regional, and cardiac backgrounds and provides 24 / 7 coverage for all trauma and acute care surgical cases at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
We are involved in unique research opportunities and clinical projects, collaborating with physicians throughout the School of Medicine.
Candidates must be ABA- certified (or eligible), with recognized expertise in trauma, resuscitation, and acute care anesthesiology.
Leadership responsibilities include :
- Oversee the professional development of trauma faculty, CRNAs, trainees, and anesthesiology technicians within the Trauma Division
- Support clinical operations, safety, and quality improvement within the Trauma Division, including investment in faculty and CRNA career development.
- Actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Trauma Division
- Work with the scheduling teams on daily staffing needs at BJH
- Assist with the preparation of annual Trauma Division budget / financial plan
- Annual evaluation of Trauma Division faculty
- Grow as an institutional leader within WUDA and WUSM
The parent Department of Anesthesiology has 175 faculty members and is a national and international leader in diverse areas of research.

Basic Qualifications
The appointment is contingent upon having a Missouri Medical License, DEA number, BNDD number and submitting to and passing a background check and drug screen, in addition to being fully credentialed by our hospitals (MBMC, BJH), and maintaining compliance with medical staff policies, including having all mandatory vaccinations.
WUSM has the following mandatory training requirements for clinical faculty in order to meet regulatory requirements and promote quality patient care :
- HIPAA Compliance - one time, online course
- Billing Compliance - annually, online course
- Risk Management Training- one time, online course
- Expert Witness Code of Conduct - one time, signed affirmation statement required
Additional Qualifications
- Experience in clinical and / or translational research is helpful, but not required.
- Experience in quality assessment / improvement is helpful, but not required.
- Ability to participate in analysis of financial and accounting data and communicate it to faculty, administrators, health care professional and others in lay terms.
- Ability to interact with, relate to, and support the activities of a highly experienced clinical faculty and members of an organized division.
- A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust and patience.
- Ability to deal with leaders throughout the University, community practice HSOs, private practice surgeons outside WUSM, and other divisions of the Department of Anesthesiology.
- Personal characteristics, which include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, strong clinical skills, and an executive demeanor with high emotional intelligence.
