Overview
The Policing Research Program at RTI International has an opening for a Senior Policing Researcher to lead and contribute to research and technical assistance projects and dissemination activities related to policing and community safety.
This position will promote the value of evidence-based research to state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as lead and coordinate outreach efforts with national policing organizations in establishing key foundations around data-driven and evidence-based policing.
The proven ability to design, implement, and carry out effective research project designs, including randomized controlled trials, will be prioritized.
In addition, demonstrated experience in developing and carrying out research focused on strengthening police-community partnerships and racial equity in the criminal justice system are areas of high interest for the position.
This position can be located at our headquarters location in Research Triangle Park, NC. Other regional offices or teleworking from any location is also an available option.
This position will start as a part-time position at 60% FTE (24 hours a week).
Responsibilities
- Contribute to project growth and business development by leading proposals and significantly contributing to writing and developing proposals related to policing and public safety.
- Identifying needs in policing and community safety and developing partnerships and funding sources, including federal, state / local, or foundation, to conduct applied research to meet these needs and apply evidence-based practices.
- Working effectively with law enforcement, other first responders, and community partners to serve as a bridge between the practitioner and research communities.
- Building strong, collaborative relationships with staff and personnel across the institute, including mentoring early career staff.
- Conduct project management tasks, such as managing project budgets in collaboration with financial analysts, tracking project timelines and deliverables, and managing quality control processes.
- Demonstrating expertise within the policing field by attending and participating in internal meetings, conference presentations, workshops, and other training and educational forums to disseminate findings and recommendations.
- Developing effective written and visual products including guides and recommendations that support effective practices, including the establishment of national standards within the field of policing.
Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS :
- PhD (criminology, economics, psychology, public health, public policy, sociology, statistics, or a related field is required) and at least six years of related experience.
- Experience conducting research with law enforcement agencies or in other related criminal legal contexts.
Experience securing external funding for research and technical assistance projects.
- Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work successfully and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Successful track record writing proposals and technical reports and in writing and publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts.
- To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the Unites States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
- Ability to obtain proper security clearance(s) and pass required background investigation(s) as noted by contracts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
- Experience designing and implementing randomized control trials (RCTs) in field-based settings preferred but not required.
- Experience as a law enforcement practitioner preferred but not required.
- Experience in the public and private sectors preferred but not required.
