We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineering Technician to join our team in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Senior Mechanical Engineering Technician is assigned to one or more vessels in the LPD 17, LSD 41 / 49, or LHD 8 / LHA 6 ship classes.
The Senior Mechanical Engineering Technician trains and assists the ship’s crew in documenting and scheduling Diesel Engine maintenance actions, collecting engine performance data, and assisting with engine balancing.
Key Responsibilities :
- Engine-line health monitoring for technical accuracy.
- Technical interaction with the ship’s maintenance team, regional maintenance centers.
- Machinery history reviews via Diesel Readiness System (DRS) Program initiatives.
- Review Diesel Engine Inspection report for accuracy.
- Write and review time-directed maintenance actions.
- Attend integrated project team development meetings, conferences, work package reviews, and industrial support visits.
- Review life cycle maintenance plans for assigned vessels.
- Monitor vessels life cycle maintenance, performance data, and reciprocating engine analysis testing for technical compliance.
- Coordinate to ensure that condition-based maintenance requirements are planned for upcoming availabilities.
- Review and submit technical reports, work specifications, and maintenance procedures.
- Evaluate changes to specification requests for technical accuracy.
- Review and provide input to maintenance policies and procedures to ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and repaired.
- Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and vendors to ensure that parts and materials are available when needed.
- Provide training to the crew on collecting engine performance data.
- Assist and train the crew in engine balancing and grooming.
Qualifications :
- Minimum Education : HS diploma or GED.
- Minimum Five (5) years of US Navy Engineman experience in the areas of diesel propulsion and power generating systems.
- Minimum Three (3) years of experience with the Diesel Maintenance Strategy (DMS) and Diesel Readiness System (DRS) programs.
- Experience should include prior certification as a US Navy Fleet Diesel Engine Inspector (DEI).
- Experience with Shipboard Automated Maintenance Manager (SAMM), conducting DOCTOR Diesel engine performance analyses (DEPAs), reviewing DOCTOR data and providing technical recommendations to correct out-of parameter conditions.
- Experience with maritime diesel engines. Preference given to candidates with OEM training and experience with the following engine lines :
- Colt-Pielstick PC2.5
- FM 38 ND 8 1 / 8
- FM PA6B STC
- Caterpillar 3608
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to understand and implement maintenance policies and procedures.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to perform work in engine rooms and onboard ships while underway.
- Able to climb ladders and lift up to 50 lbs., sit and / or stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
- Must be willing to travel : 25% travel expected.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
