The Lumen Internship
Lumen offers a fully immersive, 10-week summer internship program. Our interns demonstrate curiosity, innovation, and a passion for advancing technology.

Program dates : May 30 August 8, 2025.
Work Location
This is a hybrid position, located in our Ashburn, VA office.
The hybrid work model involves splitting your time between working in the office and working remotely).
The Main Responsibilities
Lumen’s Information Security team is looking for a Security Engineer Intern for the summer of 2025. This small team of passionate security researchers works on vast, unique information security related data sets using our distributed computing cluster.
We have a a passion for learning, running distributed systems, and an interest in the security domain. This is a team of people that love to be creative, learn new things, and innovate using their expertise to make an impact in the information security world.

This position will work within the platform and infrastructure of Black Lotus Labs, supporting the ongoing operations of a big data infrastructure that is used to ingest, parse, store, and analyze cyber threats, as well as supporting the operations of other systems to facilitate cyber security research and analysis.
The work effort of the role is focused on the ongoing operational support of on-premises and cloud hosted Linux (Ubuntu) systems that support our Hadoop ecosystem (HBase, HDFS, Spark, Kafka, etc.
Elasticsearch and Redis clusters, Docker using Docker Swarm, a malware environment, and a network of honeypots.
What you will contribute to the team :
- Manage a compute cluster of 200+ machines
- Deploy distributed solutions
- Tune and optimize systems
- Monitor and contribute to alerting systems
What We Look For in a Candidate
Program eligibility is contingent on the candidate’s commitment of the entire 10-week program. No exceptions will be made.
Required qualifications :
- Enrolled at a 4-year accredited college or university, rising senior level education status at the start of the internship
- Graduating August 2025 May 2027
- Preferred fields include but not limited to : Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Engineering, MSI or related field
- Intern must be able to work 40 hours per week during the 10-week program (May 30 August 8, 2025)
Proficiency and understanding of :
- Programming language
- System administration
- Automated software deployment
Preferred qualifications :
- Strong communication
- Self-motivated
- Quick learner and adapter
- Linux system usage or administration
- Experience with Docker and Docker Swarm
- Experience with git repository
- Scripting and automation (Bash / Python) of systems
- Experience with CI / CD deployment tools
- Experience with task tracking software like Jira
- Administrating virtual machines on cloud providers
- Securing Linux systems and associated applications
- Knowledge of iptables and nftables tools
- Managing system with infrastructure tools like Salt, Bash, ansible and puppet
- Experience with Hadoop distributions
- Administrating Elasticsearch clusters
Compensation
Internship compensation ranges depend on each individual’s level of education, geographic location, and experience / qualifications aligned to the role.
Hourly Based Pay Range :
Min : $26.00 / hour
Max : $43.00 / hour
