Position Description
The Vice President of Commercial Lending is responsible for the strategic oversight and management of the Credit Union's Commercial Lending division, which includes business development for commercial loans and deposits to support loan originations.
This leadership role focuses on driving growth, enhancing member relationships, and ensuring the commercial portfolio aligns with the credit union's strategic goals.
Position Responsibilities
- Develop and execute strategies to expand the credit union's commercial loan and deposit portfolios. Identify and pursue business opportunities to enhance the credit union's market position in the commercial lending space.
- Lead business development initiatives, fostering relationships with new and existing commercial members. Collaborate with internal and external partners to provide comprehensive financial solutions that meet the diverse needs of the credit union's commercial clientele.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the commercial lending department, ensuring efficient, compliant, and effective processes.
Continuously assess and optimize workflows to enhance service delivery and member experience. Leverage and maximize use of Commercial Loan Origination System for new loans and existing loan administration.
Ensure all commercial lending activities are in compliance with regulatory requirements, the credit union's business lending policies, and established concentration limits.
Lead the creation and revision of policies related to business services and lending, ensuring they remain aligned with industry best practices and evolving regulatory standards.
Direct and mentor the commercial lending team, fostering a culture of high performance, member service excellence, regulatory compliance, accountability, and professional growth.
Collaborate with senior management to establish and meet departmental and organizational goals.
Maintain the quality of the commercial loan portfolio by monitoring credit risk, structuring deals appropriately, and ensuring timely repayments.
Provide recommendations on loan terms, pricing, and risk management strategies.
Set and achieve the credit union's commercial lending targets, contributing to overall organizational financial goals.
Track performance against established metrics and adjust strategies as necessary to meet or exceed objectives. Establish and ensure adherence to the commercial lending department budget.
Work closely with other departments such as finance, operations, branches, marketing, and risk management to ensure seamless integration of commercial services across the credit union's offerings, maximizing member value and driving growth.
Ensure the department's engagement and contributions with internal and cross-departmental projects / initiatives.
Develop and maintain a commercial lending participation program, including identifying opportunities to buy or sell loan participations with other financial institutions.
Manage relationships with participating lenders to ensure the program supports the credit union's strategic objectives and risk management practices.
- Oversee loan administration to ensure efficient and effective management of the commercial lending portfolio. This includes timely collection of financials, completion of annual reviews, execution of loan default actions in accordance with loan agreements, and all other loan administration functions.
- Ensure audit findings are remediated within prescribed timelines to include internal loan review audits, NCUA examinations, and financial audits.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Five years to ten years of similar or related experience, extensive experience specifically in commercial lending, fundamental understanding of commercial lending operations and services with a financial institution.
Knowledge of laws and regulations governing commercial and consumer lending practices as well as collection practices.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university; and / or five to ten years related experience and / or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred.
Must have in-depth understanding of and ability to interpret regulations affecting lending programs. Extensive knowledge of consumer, commercial and real estate lending practices and procedures.
Should be able to run spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, to effectively present information to management and staff.
- Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (including Microsoft Teams) required; ability to create and maintain complex Excel spreadsheets independently
- Previous experience and understanding of commercial lending systems. Experience with FISERV DNA strongly preferred
- Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to build, maintain and inspire effective teams to produce top tier financial performance.
- Ability to analyze financial information and come to conclusions, decisions or recommendations
- Ensure that the department is providing friendly, professional, timely, personal service to all members both external and internally.
- Maintain a cohesive, highly trained and motivated staff, enough to meet the daily lending demands for members.
- Ensure the department meets and or exceeds the corporate business and financial goals.
