Job Description
Arizona State University's School of Social Transformation is seeking an experienced Instructional Designer to collaborate with faculty in maintaining and enhancing the quality of courses across various modalitiesonline / asynchronous, immersion / synchronous, and hybrid.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep knowledge of Instructional Design principles and enthusiastically leverage innovative teaching and learning strategies to promote equity, engagement, and student success.

Essential Duties
Collaborate with staff and faculty at the School of Social Transformation (SST) to effectively plan, design, update, and support Canvas courses and learning technologies for online, immersion, and hybrid modalities that meet Quality Matters standards and the expectations of the school, college, and university.
In this role, you will :
- Perform quarterly course reviews to emphasize what is working well in existing courses and discover opportunities to apply best practices in instructional design, teaching and learning
- Ensure instructional alignment among general studies criteria, syllabi, and course shells
- Establish collaborative relationship with the ASU instructional designer and technologist community
- Represent the best interests of SST in instructional technology / design demonstrations, conversations, and communities of practice
- Identify and communicate best practices for applying the principles of online teaching and adult learning within the context of facultys expertise and course topics
- Assist faculty with optimizing the engagement and success of a broad range of learners per the ASU Charter and Universal Design for Learning principles
- Ensure accessibility and ADA compliance of course materials
- Manage assigned projects, meet deadlines, and effectively communicate progress with faculty, staff, and leadership
- Research, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies such as Generative AI, AR / VR immersive technologies, adaptive courseware, and multimedia that have potential value for teaching and learning
- Coordinate with the Deans Office ID leadership to ensure learning tools are approved for use in Canvas courses
- Lead face-to-face and online faculty training and workshops; develop training materials including self-help documents, online tutorials, presentations, and other multimedia materials to assist faculty with implementing course quality best practices and emerging learning technologies
- Provide Canvas support for faculty, graduate students and staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Education or a related field AND Three years of providing learning / instructional design and / or technology development services.
Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
Education and Interests :
- Evidence of a Masters degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or a related area (strongly preferred).
- Interest in the programs and course offerings of the School of Social Transformation.
- Interest in integrating emerging technologies and career competencies into learning experiences.
Instructional Design :
- Five years of experience as an Instructional Designer, Learning Experience Designer, or similar title.
- Significant experience in designing, developing, implementing, and revising for-credit online courses in a higher education environment (strongly preferred).
This includes writing learning objectives, proofreading and editing course materials for clarity and instructional alignment, and providing feedback to faculty for course quality improvements.
- Experience applying adult learning principles to online course design, maintenance, and support.
- Experience coaching faculty on instructional video lecture and multimedia best practices.
- Experience using the Canvas learning management system as a course administrator.
- Experience with accessibility considerations, accommodations, and alternative formats in course materials.
- Experience developing and delivering training presentations, such as faculty workshops.
- Familiarity with the Quality Matters rubric, Universal Design for Learning, and current course quality best practices.
- Experience integrating and supporting faculty use of learning technologies.
Collaboration and Project Management :
- Experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with staff and faculty.
- Experience with project management, including establishing priorities, communicating expectations, meeting milestones, and producing deliverables on time and in accordance with the academic calendar.
Communication and Problem Solving :
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in visual, verbal, and written forms as well as persuade and motivate others while being responsive to their needs and concerns.
- Experience in researching and resolving complex Canvas issues and pedagogical challenges.
Adaptability and Attention to Detail :
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to ambiguity, pivot priorities, and manage multiple projects.
- Evidence of a thorough and precise attention to detail in adhering to guidelines, structure, and established policies.
Working Environment
- This position requires a presence on the Tempe campus every week.
- After the onboarding period and if approved by supervisor, there may be an opportunity for some remote days.
- This is the only ID position within the school, though you will join a community of IDs in The College.
- Primary functions include attending in-person and remote meetings, emailing, and working in Canvas.
- Tasks are performed on a laptop in a comfortable, climate-controlled office setting, and work is regularly reviewed by supervisor to ensure successful completion of tasks and continuous improvement.
