Job Summary

The College of Education, Academic Advisors promote an inclusive environment that challenges and supports students by providing meaningful opportunities for student learning, development, and integration of curricular and co-curricular experiences.

Advisors are dedicated to empowering students to be active responsible learners while guiding students to make well-informed decisions that lead to the achievement of students’ educational, career and life goals.

Create an open, respectful, and inclusive environment by utilizing an equity-minded, student-centered practice that emphasizes mutual respect, dignity, self-awareness, and authenticity.

Center the student in an asset framed approach where advising differentiates educational guidance to meet students where they are and acknowledges the critical value of each student’s unique social capital.

Empower students to be active responsible learners and assist them in making well-informed decisions. Guide students in course selection and the process for registering for courses.

Identify campus activities, and programs opportunities related to students' major. Maintain a consistent pattern of contact and communications with assigned students.

Use data to provide timely outreach to students on their academic progress and conduct audits on student’s degree progress.

Assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources. Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records.

Teach students about the university’s structure, systems, policies, and practices.

What You’ll Be Doing :

Share knowledge with students about undergraduate / professional programs and appropriate course selections, departmental policy, and specific program information to various constituents.

Consult with and advocate for students regarding petitions for financial aid appeals, special policy waivers, etc.

Provide guidance and assistance to students with plan of study projection for financial aid appeals

Conduct audits on student’s progress toward their degree, including precertification audit the semester the student is a candidate.

Orient students to progression through degree programs.

Assist with the preparation of and participation in ALL ABOARD.

Maintain certifications related to handling student data (FERPA, GLBA, etc.).

Provide assistance during major and career exploration and discuss opportunities with students wishing to change their major to another school / college.

Assist students develop intercultural knowledge and cultural intelligence and to respect differences.

Facilitate student decision-making and challenge students to think critically about their choices.

What We Are Looking For :

Education and Experience

  • Must have an earned graduate or professional degree in a field relevant to the position.
  • At least one (1) year advising experience.

Skills needed :

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, current and prospective students, parents, and families. Excellent verbal and
  • written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and utilize campus resources for individuals and groups.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a changing environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

What is helpful or Nice to have :

  • Knowledge of undergraduate student development and recruitment.
  • Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University.
  • Knowledge of field related to majors advised.
