Job Summary
The Nutritional Program Coordinator works as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide nutrition counseling and support for medical clients in accordance with premier quality care standards, defined in part by the federal Ryan White program (HRSA).
The person in this role maintains quality care for all clients through interaction with program personnel and provides assistance as necessary to enable each client to reach his / her maximum level of independence in acquiring food and ability to follow diet recommendations.
The Nutritional Program Coordinator provides HIV specialty nutritional counseling, as well as nutritional counseling for primary care medical clients.
Maintains systematic records in accordance with professional guidelines and works as a member of the Medical Unit in order to provide a continuum of quality medical care for all Whitman-Walker clients.
Oversees the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Self-Management Education program at both WWH sites and coordinates with the appropriate staff to ensure all protocols and procedures are being followed in accordance with AND standards.
Primary Essential Duties of the Nutritional Program Coordinator
Maintains systematic records in accordance with professional guidelines and works as a member of the Medical Unit in
order to provide a continuum of quality medical care for all Whitman-Walker clients.
- Completes a comprehensive nutritional assessment (including BIA) of all HIV+ clients, ensuring appropriate service delivery.
- Conducts Diabetes groups weekly at both Whitman-Walker sites in accordance with the American Diabetes Association guidelines.
- Oversees the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Self-Management Education program at both WWH sites and
coordinates with the appropriate staff to ensure all protocols and procedures are being followed in accordance with AND
standards.
- Establishes, coordinates, and supervises new community nutrition programs, developing a nutrition curriculum for the clinic based on up-to-date research and practice findings.
- Prepares monthly reports on the delivery of services as required by clinic grants.
- Write proposals for nutrition-related grants and participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality-assurance measures.
- Coordinates monthly training for persons living with AIDS and caregivers regarding special nutritional needs, food preparation requirements, and infection-control issues.
- Develop procedures and policies for nutrition services to help improve the quality of care and service to clients at the Clinic.
- Provides assistance in the orientation, observation, and assignment of students, interns, and volunteers.
Budget Responsibilities
Controls and monitors the budget for Nutritional Drink Supplements and works with the manager on the total nutrition budget.
Qualifications of the Nutritional Program Coordinator :
- Knowledge of nutritional planning standards and guidelines, especially with regard to HIV+, diabetic, obese, or otherwise dietetically sensitive individuals.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to engage resistant clients and facilitate their active participation in treatment outcomes.
- Strong administrative management skills, including the ability to cope with the flexibility of a daily schedule and the ability to conduct group and individual counseling sessions in a variety of physical settings.
- Sensitivity to issues in minority and GLBT communities, especially those that may impact behavior and thoughts related to nutrition.
Requirements of the Nutritional Program Coordinator :
- Bachelor’s degree in human nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field required, with licensure as a
- Dietitian in the District of Columbia.
- Certified Diabetes Educator Preferred.
- Two years of clinical experience post-licensure preferred with a focus on HIV / AIDS.
- Must have and maintain an active certification as a Registered Dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Dietetic Association Membership.
Working Conditions :
Working conditions for this position are normal for an office environment. Individual may be required to work evenings and / or weekends and organization events.
Physical Demands :
- Lifting : No more than 20 lbs. and infrequently.
- Movement : Standing and sitting for long periods.
- Visual : Long periods on computer.
- Concentration : Extended periods of engagement with computer systems where concentration is key to accuracy in data entry.
Intermittent periods of engagement with a telephone system to respond to inquiries where concentration is key to task performance.
Communication : Direct and indirect communication. Written and verbal competency.

The hours of operation for the organization range from 7 am-8 pm Monday-Friday.
The full-time hours for all roles within the organization range from 37.5 and 40 hours, depending on the role.
