Transportation Safety Manager

SALARY RANGE : $105,000 - $118,000 / year

POSITION SUMMARY :

The Transportation Safety Manager is responsible for promoting a culture of safety and directly motivating drivers to support operational safety objectives.

The Transportation Safety Manager will coach drivers throughout the organization in an effort to reinforce safe driving and work behaviors.

Some of the responsibilities will include management of our Lytx safety system, ride-a-along training events, classroom training instruction and post incident retraining.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  • Implement comprehensive Driver safety programs tailored to the transportation operations
  • Supervise and mentor the Driver Trainer / Coach on the adherence to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures, correcting errors or problems
  • Ensure all transportation activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including DOT, OSHA, and FMCSA standards.
  • Monitor safety analytics for the company and using data to drive change
  • Ability to conduct and facilitate engaging safety training programs
  • Monitor and review camera system data triggered activity for risk
  • Ensure high levels of engagement and an effective communicator between the drivers through discussions designed to coach, mentor and train on changing unsafe work habits
  • Maintain detailed and specific notes of discussions using the Lytx coaching module
  • Review camera systems on equipment regularly to ensure function on a rotating basis
  • Escalate camera issues to local division shop and management for repair as applicable
  • Coordinate equipment purchases and vendor repairs with local divisions as needed
  • Participate in local division training sessions as required
  • Collaborate in the development of safety knowledge policies and work with operational personnel to implement best practices
  • Complete post-accident and proactive instructive ride-alongs as needed
  • Become a subject matter expert in vehicle camera equipment and software
  • Foster a culture of safety within the organization through continuous education, awareness campaigns, and leadership by example.
  • Perform all other duties assigned as needed

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a transportation management position, required
  • Refuse experience, preferred
  • Valid California Driver’s License, required
  • Valid California Commercial license and DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC), preferred
  • Clean driving record with no major violations or DUI within last 3 years
  • 5 years Safety management experience preferred
  • Must be able to pass and become certified in the Smith System driver safety Program.

COMPETENCIES :

  • Written, verbal, interpersonal communication and public speaking skills both in English and Spanish.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology software and adaptable to changing needs as the Lytex program matures over time
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Be able to travel throughout Southern California area, frequently.
  • Ability to work weekends, have a flexible schedule to accommodate training or job duties
  • Will be required to pass a Microsoft office and typing proficiency test.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS :

The job involves outdoor work and exposure to various weather conditions. Flexible working hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required to accommodate waste collection schedules and trainings.

The Transportation Manager should be prepared to demonstrate physically demanding work to employees they are training. This position is exposed to changing road conditions and closures.

This job requires operating a commercial truck, climb in and out of the truck cab frequently and perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.

There is continuous eye / hand coordination, handling, and wrist motion, hearing and smelling.
