Department : Recreations Part-time Limited Hourly / Non-exempt

Position Summary

The Dance Instructor performs duties under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor. General responsibilities include, but not limited instructing students, choreographing dance combinations, taking attendance, controlling the music source (CD player / IPad), demonstrating dance combinations, lining up students, costume measuring, dance recital music cuts and creating routines for performance at the recital.

This is an at-will position.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Instructs students in dance, choreographing combinations, correcting mistakes and creating routines for performance at the recital during recital season.
  • Attendance at dance staff meetings, picture day, costume measuring day, dress rehearsals and all dance recitals is required.
  • Follows direction given by the Recreation Supervisor in relation to classes and instruction.
  • Actively plans and executes dances for recitals to insure they are organized and successful.
  • Communicates with parents on their students’ progress and answer any questions, or forward them to the Supervisor.
  • Role model for students, wearing appropriate dance attire and shoes at all time while on duty.
  • Assists in selecting music, costumes and attire appropriate for students in class and recital within the allowed budget.
  • Cleans and sets-up of the dance studio room. Equipment such as stereo system, mats or props are used in a respectable and safe manner before, during and after class.

Be ready for class 15 minutes before class.

  • Complies with all safety and loss prevention policies.
  • Inform supervisor of any unsafe conditions or hazardous work procedures.
  • Correct any unsafe conditions, if possible, and instruct co-workers on safety procedures.
  • Completes all additional duties as prescribed by management.
  • Assists other Park District employees with special events when needed.

Communication & Customer Service

  • Develops and maintains positive and effective working relationship with coworkers and to promote and maintain high morale and enthusiasm.
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Communicates matters of importance in a timely manner.
  • Makes recommendations to management for improvements and efficiencies.
  • Employee represents the Dundee Township Park District in a professional manner.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and department specific safety rules.
  • Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and / or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.
  • Reports any work-related injuries to supervisor promptly.
  • Attends required safety program and in service education meetings.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions, if possible, alerts co-workers to potential unsafe conditions and / or reports them to supervisor .
  • Maintain control of the students at all times, using positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Instructs co-workers, when necessary, on safety procedures or precautions.
  • Must obtain CPR / First Aid certification.

Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years of age and an experienced dancer with at least 1 year of leading dance classes. Must have experience with young children through adults, their parents and other co-workers;

and be skilled in varying areas of dance such as ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, pointe etc. Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.

Be able to lead classes, teach, demonstrate dance skills and give necessary correction to participants is critical. Ability to conduct tasks in a professional manner, serving always as a role model to the children.

Must have the ability to read, write and organize materials.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good physical condition, sufficient strength, and mobility required.
  • Mechanical aptitude required, including the use of tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Knowledge and skills in technology, or the ability to learn.
  • Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English language.
  • Possess good problem solving skills and has capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and / or emergency situations.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including some days, nights and weekends as required.
  • Ability to pay meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to execute the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Hours Standards

This is a part time seasonal position. Work hours are dependent on events or activities, but include days, evenings and weekends.

Classes range from 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on class enrollment.
