JOB SUMMARY

The Referral Specialist reviews inbound referrals and schedules new patients. The specialist must thoroughly understand and comprehend retinal diagnoses, and appropriately differentiate between emergent and non-emergent referrals.

Utilize a high level of customer service skills and phone etiquette to create a positive rapport in providing professional, empathetic and efficient service to our referring providers and patients.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Ensures complete and accurate demographic, insurance and appropriate clinical information is received and processed.
  • Appropriately schedule referred patients in a timely manner, based on diagnosis and urgency of the referral; follows inbound referral procedures.
  • Answer patient and provider questions.
  • Facilitate internal communication on multiple platforms to ensure an efficient appointment flow.
  • Answer incoming calls and assist with inquiries.
  • Schedule patient appointments.
  • Provide all appropriate information to patients in preparation for appointment : patient intake forms, financial obligations.
  • Monitor, follow up and accurately document patient and referring provider communication.
  • Have a strong understanding of medical insurance policies and any additional requirements according to the plan (ex : referral / authorization requirements).
  • Perform all duties within HIPAA regulations; maintain confidentiality of all doctor, staff, and patient information.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

SPECIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES :

  • Strong interpersonal customer service skills, including effective listening, clear verbal and written communication, problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrate reliability, a pleasant attitude, and a willingness to perform the duties as required.
  • Reliable transportation to travel to work location.
  • Master multiple software systems to input and retrieve data.
  • Master ophthalmology and retina terminology.
  • Multi-talk and work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Perform accurately and efficiently.
  • Operate computer devices, scanners and fax machines.
  • Frequent use of computer terminal to read and write.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, sitting, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Lifting up to 10lbs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a medical practice preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • Non - exempt position, eligible for overtime.
