SUMMARY

The Assistant Director, Employer Relations (Assistant Director) is a critical connection between the legal market and South Texas College of Law’s legal talent.

The Assistant Director plays a pivotal role in, and assumes responsibility for, all aspects of employer relations, recruiting, and all activities related to employment events and programs.

The Assistant Director is responsible for developing and providing comprehensive and robust recruitment opportunities for all students, in all areas, as well as anticipating and identifying employer needs for recruitment.

The Assistant Director counsels students on career goals, objectives, and job searches and is responsible for implementing all functions related to all student recruiting processes for the institution's on-campus and off-campus recruitment programs.

In doing so, the Assistant Director routinely participates in outreach to local, regional, and national legal employers to develop awareness of the College and to develop a deeper understanding of specific practice areas and needs of the employers.

The Assistant Director is responsible for connecting law firms, corporations, government offices, and non-profit organizations with South Texas Law students to secure internships, field placement, and post-graduate opportunities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

The Assistant Director will stay current on trends and best practices in legal hiring and career development through professional development activities, conferences, and networking opportunities to cultivate and maintain relationships with legal employers, including alumni community for South Texas College of Law Houston, law firms, government agencies, corporations, and non-profit organizations, and facilitate engagement and job opportunities for students and alumni.

Career Counseling :

Provide individualized career counseling services for proportional share of student body (300+ law students comprised of 1L, 2L, 3L, full-time / part-time / online populace) in all facets of the practice of law, as well as non-legal / non-traditional areas, in which students might utilize their law degrees, including but not limited to : Big Law Firms, Mid-sized Law Firms, Small Law Firms, Government, Public Interest, Judicial Internships, Judicial Clerkships, and Juris Doctorate Advantage Opportunities.

Counseling in these areas should include guidance on the development of career goals, job-search strategies, and interview / networking skills.

Counsel students regarding participation, policies, and procedures in all recruiting events and programs in which the College participates.

Counsel students on interview skills and conduct mock interviews to evaluate and improve student performance and preparation.

Conduct review of student marketing materials, including resumes and cover letters, to format documents according to standards within the legal job market and provide tailored feedback to enhance marketability.

Maintain working and functional knowledge of available resources and protocols to facilitate the provision of trauma-informed counseling to identify students in crisis and offer support and appropriate resources.

Recruitment Programming and Outreach :

The Assistant Director is responsible for advancing and complementing all aspects of recruiting including cultivation, management, and maintenance of employer outreach while developing, executing, and refining program offerings, student development initiatives, and networking events that align with the school's mission.

In doing so, they will be responsible for :

  • Cultivating new and long term relationship with employers. Representing the law school to internal and external audiences to promote and enhance opportunity for student and alumni placement across sectors in the legal profession;
  • Sustaining existing relationships with a network of 2,000+ employers via strategic campaigns, on-site / virtual meetings, presentations, and collaborations;
  • Designing, developing, and administering outreach campaigns to drive growth, diversify opportunities, and align students, alumni, and organizational programming with the legal community;

Overseeing the strategic planning and execution of at least six phases of traditional on-campus interview programs and ad-hoc recruitment sessions as needed throughout the semester

  • Developing and enforcing policies for employer participation in recruiting program regarding acceptable methods of employer outreach / marketing and diversity recruiting efforts, adherence to office procedures and deadlines, interviewing protocols, offer / accept lead times and incentives, testing practices, ethical and professional conduct;
  • Establishing and enforcing guidelines for student participation in the recruiting program including recruiting deadlines, procedures, and schedules.
  • Responding to and authorizing student requests for exception to policy / procedure, e.g., interviews outside the schedule;
  • Handling student feedback on questionable employer behavior or activities;
  • Developing and implementing application and program timelines for employment programs, including on-campus visits, employer visits to campus, job fairs, consortium events, and related recruiting opportunities;
  • Organizing and setting the annual recruiting calendar, including all deadlines and processes. Scheduling dates for employer information sessions, interviews, and fairs.
  • Advising employers on comprehensive marketing strategies, appropriateness of employer expectations, inclusion of personnel representative, on-site recruiting process, job description, salary negotiations, etc;
  • Identifying industry shifts and developing strategic plans to ensure the progression of goals for internal and external partners;
  • Surveying and assessing employer recruiting needs, quality of recruiting services provided, and other employer related data management in order to improve the recruiting program;
  • Collaborating cross-departmentally to effectively coordinate and advance institutional customer service efforts;
  • Identifying and developing student job development programs and resource materials to help students prepare for their interactions with employers;
  • Managing the design and delivery of communications and marketing material to students and employers regarding recruitment activities;
  • Conducting employer / student offer surveys and class-wide career interests surveys to compile and analyze data for overall placement and employer relations;

Maintaining and promoting development of the CRC Peer-to-Peer Network

Work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Provide support to the department in targeting legal and non-legal employers for potential employment opportunities for all law students.

Comply with all aspects of the law school’s Customer Service Standards.

Other duties as assigned to contribute to the overall mission and goals of the law school and the Career Resource Center.

Self-starter with the ability to prioritize and organize.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

JD Preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Possess good oral and written communication skills with the ability to accurately proofread all outgoing material.

Ability to define routine problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to solve routine problems and / or deal with a variety of variables in situations, especially when other Career Resource members may be out of the office or unavailable.
