Position Summary

The Graduate Career Placement Advisor’s key responsibilities include establishing new employer relationships to hire Columbia Engineers and Applied Scientists, deepening and further existing employer relationships to hire Columbia Engineers and Applied Scientists, accurately tracking the placement rate of the assigned cohort of students to achieve 100%, coaching students on how to secure positions, and supporting their professional development.

The Graduate Career Placement Advisor will focus on school-wide programming and provide support to individual programs / departments as needed.

Responsibilities

85% -Place students in full time positions and / or internships :

Cultivate new relationships and maintain existing relationships with employers to facilitate the hiring of students, striving for 100% placement of our MS population.

Maintain and expand relationships with alumni to facilitate the hiring of graduating students.

Source, post / advertise employment opportunities (full-time and internships).

Organize recruitment events with employers to facilitate hiring.

Maintain relationships with alumni to facilitate the hiring of graduating students.

Conduct industry outreach and create marketing materials for social media outlets.

Collect and analyze accurate placement statistics; generate reports of related statistics.

Provide individual counseling to assist students in achieving career and placement goals.

10%- Engineering Student Affairs :

Support signature Columbia Engineering student affairs activities including Welcome Day, Graduate Engineers Connect, graduation ceremonies, and other school-wide initiatives for engineering students.

Support Columbia Engineering student on-boarding activities including admissions yield, orientation, and advising.

Serve on ESA committees (e.g. conduct, on-call, delegates), support large-scale student life programming, and participate in division-wide ESA priories as needed.

5%- Performs other and related duties and responsibilities as assigned / requested.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor degree is required; Minimum of 2-4 years of related student / academic affairs, career placement, or professional development experience required.

Possess expertise in career development trends and issues affecting our constituents (graduate engineering students) and associated professionals.

Experience and appreciation in working with international and domestic students in higher education.

Possess excellent interpersonal and administrative skills. Ability to work independently and under pressure, with high level of attention to detail.

Candidate must exercise good judgment and flexibility. Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

Must be able to communicate effectively and diplomatically with staff, faculty, students, employers, and alumni in small and large group settings.

Excellent command of English (verbal and written).

Strong computer literacy / proficiency required : an understanding and appreciation of student services database software and on-line resources, and the willingness and enthusiasm to respond to the needs of students in an increasingly technologically-oriented society.

Proficiency with Google suite of products, MS office, publishing software, social media, etc.

Data analysis and data visualization skills : candidate need to be comfortable with analyzing and work with large volumes of student and employer data.

Must be willing to work on occasional evenings and weekends, on a need basis.

Positive, mission-oriented, forward-thinking attitude and sense of humor a must.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate level work is preferred.
  • Familiar with student career development, coaching, and large-group facilitation.
  • Familiar with student and academic affairs, departmental program curriculum and requirements, and web management and administration.
  • Experience in industries of interest of our graduate engineering students.
