Job overview :

A lead fiber optic splicer is a professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic cables and connections.

This role involves a range of tasks related to splicing fiber optic cables, ensuring that the connections are strong and reliable to support high-speed data transmission.

Responsibilities :

  • Splicing and Terminating Fiber Optics : Use specialized equipment to splice and terminate fiber optic cables, ensuring low loss and high performance of the connections.
  • Testing and Troubleshooting : Conduct tests on fiber optic systems to check for signal loss and other issues. Use equipment like optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs) to troubleshoot and diagnose problems.
  • Installation : Install fiber optic cables in various environments, including underground, aerial, and within buildings.

Ensure proper alignment and secure placement to avoid damage.

  • Documentation : Maintain detailed records of splicing, testing, and installation processes. Document any issues or changes made during the work.
  • Safety Compliance : Follow safety protocols to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment, especially when working at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Collaboration : Work closely with engineers, project managers, and other technicians to ensure that fiber optic installations meet technical specifications and project requirements.

Qualifications :

  • A good driving record is required.
  • Ability to properly clean and maintain the equipment, check fluid levels, and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle / equipment to assure your vehicle / equipment is performing at optimum safety.
  • Load material or equipment for transport from show-up yard to job site and secure as appropriate.
  • Ability to distinguish the standard 12 color code system for fiber.
  • Possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient with use and maintenance of optical splicing and test equipment (OTDR, OLTS, VFL, OPM, OPI / Traffic Identifier)
  • Proficient with hot cuts, maintenance window, CO / NOC communications with a tester / MSO technician
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot various fiber architecture including DWDM, CWDM mux / splitters and equipment.
  • Proven leadership experience to assist and direct workflow to produce the highest quality results.
  • Knowledge of NESC, OSHA, and related state and local codes.
  • Able to work in heights and confined spaces.
  • Operate hydraulic aerial lifts and ladders mounted to trucks.
  • Must be able to lift / carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed with or without assistance.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized. Keep detailed records of work activity.
  • Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be available to work any shift and On-call rotation required.
  • Must be able to read, adapt, and build from blueprints and / or wire diagrams / splice charts.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, basic Computer skills.
  • Set up a safety perimeter using signage, cones, and / or safety barriers.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
