Mission of TSC & vision of Umoja program vision

The Transfer Student Center (TSC) works with all transfer students to facilitate their transition and overall success at UCI.

The Transfer Student Center directs students to appropriate campus programs and services. We also organize weekly workshops, provide formal and informal mentoring, and provide students with a space for studying.

The Transfer Student Center strives to foster a sense of community among the transfers at UCI and advocates for them in order to enhance their academic and social experience.

TSC works closely with Tau Sigma National Honor Society and provides guidance in this organization's work to advocate and support transfer students at UCI.

The Umoja Community at UC Irvine is designed to assist students of African descent in the transition to a four-year university.

We offer resources and support to help students set goals, and maximize their experience at UCI to achieve academic, professional, and personal success.

The Transfer Student Center staff and counselors will provide individualized support to meet students where they are and support them in their goals and future aspirations.

Your Role on the Team

  • Under the direction of the Program Director for the Transfer Student Center, the Transfer Academic Achievement Counselor for the Transfer Student Center works independently to provide high-quality programs, services, and initiatives that enhance transfer student engagement and retention at UCI;
  • provides high-quality programming, advising, and support to current and prospective transfer students related to transition, academic and personal success, and interprets related University policies and procedures;

this role develops, implements, and evaluates transfer student initiatives including outreach, counseling, and referral efforts to assist students experiencing academic and / or adjustment issues, and implements programs and services that positively impact transfer student engagement.

Additionally, the primary focus will be to provide leadership, coordination, and counseling services for UCI's Umoja Program.

The position would be charged with working collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, Center for Black Cultures Resources and Research, Student Outreach and Retention Center and more, to enhance the transfer student experience.

This role will also support summer programming to engage incoming transfer students through programming and orientation.

Assists with various administrative duties, as assigned.

Required :

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
  • Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under-prepared students in higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Familiarity with the unique issues of transfer students, which are often, adult, re-entry, parents, and / or first-generation, in a college setting.
  • Direct experience in developing innovative workshops, seminars and presentations
  • Knowledge of the Umoja Program and / or experience supporting Black / African American students in their development in education.
  • 3+ Years of experience in student advising and program development.
  • BA / BS in related area.

Preferred :

  • Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling, and analyzing data, and generating reports.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs.
  • Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
  • Master's degree in related area.

Special Conditions :

Required to work on nights and weekends on occasion.
