Job Description
The School of Arts and Sciences seeks adjunct faculty to teach chemistry lab courses for the upcoming academic year (Fall 2024 - Spring 2025).
Labs include first-year college chemistry for pre-med / health science majors and allied health majors, and second-year organic chemistry for pre-med / pre-pharmacy majors.
- Delivers instruction in 3 hour laboratory sections
- Comes prepared to teach, including reviewing background lecture material, lab protocols, class worksheets, instructor notes, lecture videos, etc.
- Attends required pre-lab staff meetings, either in-person or via Zoom / Teams
- Grades assignments in a timely manner
- Communicates with course / lab coordinators in a professional and timely manner in preparation for teaching and grading
- Replies to emails from students, course / lab coordinators, and administrators in a timely manner
- Uses the University’s learning management system to enter grades.
- Assists students through office hours or scheduled appointments, by Zoom / Teams, phone or email, and through other University-approved mechanisms
- Supports incorporation of diversity, equity and inclusion in the curriculum
Requirements
Required :
- Advanced degree (masters or PhD) in chemistry or similar discipline
- Commitment to undergraduate education and student success
- Minimum of one (1) year teaching chemistry at the college / university level, preferred
- For organic chemistry labs, experience with common practical techniques such as distillation, thin-layer chromatography, organic synthesis, NMR and IR spectroscopy, etc.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team, effectively interacting with a wide array of parties at all levels (undergraduate students, faculty, course / lab coordinators, co-instructors, administration, staff)
