JOB DESCRIPTION :
Human Resources announces an opening for 0.5 FTE Building Maintenance Mechanic (shift to be determined). This is a 12 month, 20 hours per week work schedule, Grade M-08 position.
NOTE regarding work schedule / shift assignment : The work schedule is subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS.
Incumbents in this class are hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (The work involves responsibility for performing work at the journeyman level in several trades, information listed may not include all duties performed;
not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated.)
- As assigned, participates in the inspection of gauges, meters, controls, and equipment (e.g., HVAC systems) to ensure all units are operating properly and prepares inspection reports.
- Assists in making adjustments, servicing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance and filter replacement on all HVAC equipment to ensure optimum efficiency of operation.
- Participates in general and preventive maintenance, adjustments, and minor repairs to electrical and plumbing systems.
- Performs general carpentry tasks, assists in repairing drywall; paints; repairs wallpaper tears; adjusts and repairs hardware on doors such as door knobs, locks, door checks, panic bars and hinges;
repairs cabinets, counters, tables and chairs; and replaces stained or missing ceiling tiles.
Performs related work as required or assigned.
NOTE HAZARDS / UNUSUAL DEMANDS : Employee is exposed to potential chemical hazards and toxic substances when using cleaning liquids, solvents and solutions, to potential biological hazards when cleaning restrooms, and to potential physical hazards when operating custodian equipment.
Work also exposes employee to dust, fumes and occasionally to adverse weather conditions. Work requires the frequent use of safety clothing and equipment and compliance with safety procedures.
EXPERIENCE :
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Completion of the twelfth grade, and completion of a formal apprenticeship in one of the building or related trades, and considerable experience in general maintenance or repair work;
or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills, and ability.
QUALIFICATIONS :
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in several of the building trades.
- Skill in the care and use of tools used in the repair of mechanical equipment and general building maintenance.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to locate and repair defects in mechanical equipment.
- Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending, working in tiring uncomfortable positions, and from ladders, scaffolds, on roofs, etc.
- Potential hazards include live low-voltage electricity, paint fumes.
- Some tasks are performed in poorly lit, poorly ventilated areas, requiring use of protective clothing or equipment.
