General Laborers are responsible for performing tasks associated with securing and offloading barges as well as maintenance on equipment and the safety of fellow teammates, and the environment.
They must be able to perform tasks in all weather conditions outside. Work is performed on 40 hours a week shift. This position will require overtime.
Essential Responsibilities :
- Prioritize safety above all else, adhering to company safety protocols and regulations at all times.
- Conduct regular inspections to identify and address any safety hazards promptly, ensuring the well-being of individuals and equipment.
- Utilize safety equipment as mandated by company policies to maintain a secure working environment.
- Perform tasks such as material removal from barge combing using appropriate tools like shovels and brooms.
- Verify the watertight integrity of barges through thorough inspections.
- Employ environmentally friendly methods to clean exterior areas of barges.
- Assist material handler operators by handling rigging during machine operations.
- Inspect cables, wires, and lines to guarantee their suitability for use.
- Utilize power tools as needed for repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Conduct painting duties as required.
- Safely enter confined spaces in accordance with established company policies.
- Familiarize oneself with and strictly adhere to all company policies, as well as OSHA and federal regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements :
- Must possess or have the ability to acquire a Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC)
- Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with team members.
- Proficiency in operating basic hand and power tools.
- A willingness to undergo training and certifications as required by the company.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
Preferred Qualifications :
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a similar role within the industry
- Prior experience in a safety sensitive position
Physical Capabilities :
The unpredictable, ever-changing, and inherently dangerous nature of towboat operations requires the laborers to be physically qualified to ensure his / her own safety, as well as that of the team members.
Specific physical requirements include :
- Traverse boats, barges, and tows a minimum of two (2) miles per day, including on wet or slick surfaces.
- Transport equipment of 60 to 100 pounds up to 500 feet.
- Ascend / Descend a 90 degree ladder up to 40 feet.
- Move, transport, and position equipment up to 100 pounds.
- Position self to move through 18-inch diameter hatch.
- Move two (2) feet horizontally and vertically.
- Maintain constant communication with team members.
- Ability to recognize and identify distant objects and recognize distances between objects.
- Ability to work in environments with fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, walk, and kneel for extended periods.
- Capability to perform tasks in confined spaces and at heights.
- Work shift a min. of 40 hours a week. (overtime may be required)
