POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York / CUNY.

In 2019, LaGuardia served over 30,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs. Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts.

Consistent with the diversity of Queens, 56 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States. More than half are first-generation college students.

Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 58 percent are women, and 31 percent are over the age of 25.

Forty-eight percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, making the college a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Sixty-six percent of LaGuardia students receive financial aid.

Slightly less than half attend part-time, often because they need to work to support their families. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.

S. community colleges in economic mobility moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond in a 2017 Stanford University study.

The ASAP Advisor is a member of an integrated College team providing individual academic, career, and related support to an assigned group of college students as they progress through the rting to the ASAP Director, the ASAP Academic Student Advisor will accomplish all the duties listed in the CUNY Title Overview, as well as the following responsibilities :

Delivers comprehensive advisement to an assigned group of students through degree completion and actively follows up with students to encourage programmatic and institutional co-curricular engagement.

Conducts workshops and group advisement on topics of relevance and interest, including transfer, financial aid, and wellness.

Reviews student progress and tracks student use of academic support services.

Conducts regular outreach to faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success.

Maintains accurate tracking data and notes for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs.

Supports annual recruitment of students through new student onboardings, advising, and registration events.

Organizes periodic special events and programs for students, faculty, and staff.

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in an appropriate discipline and four years related experience.

Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in an appropriate discipline and four years related experience. A Master’s degree in Psychology, Counseling, Educational Administration, Educational Psychology and / or Social Work may be substituted for 2 years’ experience.

The ideal candidate will have :

Experience providing guidance, support, and services to students.

Strong understanding of the educational needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds.

Proven ability to maintain accurate and detailed student records.

Demonstrated skill in understanding and respecting cultural differences.

Proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Access and Excel) with an aptitude for learning new systems as needed.

Excellent organizational, collaborative, communication, and facilitation ledge of equitable and inclusive advisement practices to support students.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Experience presenting workshops, seminars and working with community college students successful applicant will be familiar with and able to utilize position-related computerized applications and information technology.

Demonstrated self-sufficiency, good problem-solving and follow-up skills.

Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.

Excellent communication and administrative skills.

Proven history of working in retention-based programming.

Ability to work in a centralized program with a reporting structure that includes a central CUNY ASAP Office.

Multilingual ability (English / Spanish) is a plus.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) helps students earn their college degree as quickly as possible, by removing the financial, academic, and personal obstacles that many students confront.

Key ASAP program features include a consolidated block schedule, cohorts by major, required full-time study and comprehensive advisement and career development services.

Financial incentives include tuition waivers for financial aid eligible students, yearly textbook vouchers, and MetroCards for all students.
