Job Description :
TITLE : Occupational Health Nurse
- Reporting to the Sr. Manager - Safety, Strategy and Governance, the Occupational Health Specialist will work with a team of Registered Nurses to provide expertise in the administration and coordination of client’s fitness for work standards including : Pre-placement, transfer and backfill health assessments
- Routine health surveillance
- Alcohol and Drug
- DOT and Non-DOT Programs
- Substance Abuse Program
Skilled in process development and enterprise-wide standard creation, the individual will provide technical expertise for occupational health related matters across North America for all client.
This role will be accountable for the governance of our fitness for work expectations and management of our medical service providers.
The successful individual will possess strong leadership skills and project management capabilities with a proven track record of influencing and motivating core staff, line management, and senior leadership.
What you’ll do
- Responsible for the governance and continuous improvement of client’s Fitness-for-Work standards and supporting resources documents.
- Interface with internal / external stakeholders (, employment law, human resources, safety specialists, third party occupational health vendors) to improve business relationships and effective delivery of our program.
- Provide subject matter expertise for occupational related illness / injury and fitness for work.
- Oversee and support pre-employment / transfer medicals, health surveillance activities, alcohol & drug testing, and other fitness for work assessments on behalf of the enterprise.
- Actively manage third-party medical service providers.
- Contribute to the development of health protection strategies and reporting of our key performance indicators.
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a health-related discipline.
- 4-6 years of related work in occupational health, preferably industrial setting.
- Experience with alcohol and drug testing requirements for employees with a preferred qualification if experience for covered employees by DOT Testing Regulation (49 CFR Part 40).
- Proven experience producing technical reports, preparing and delivering oral presentations.
- Experience with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Excel, and team shared Outlook inboxes.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience with coordinating clinical and testing services in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree in Nursing is preferred (BSN) or equivalent, legally licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse
- Certification as an Occupational Health Nurse Specialist (COHN-S) preferred.
- Previous experience serving as Designated Employer Representative (DER) for employer with DOT covered employees (PHMSA, FMCSA, or FAA).
- Working knowledge of Drug and Alcohol Testing processes and regulations in Canada and the United States.
- Experience working with multiple stakeholder groups in fitness for work determinations.
- Previous experience with daily management of vendor relationships and service delivery.
- Ability to multi-task and respond quickly to the daily tactical tasks and inquiries in alignment with the Occupational Health team’s protocols.

- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Post-Secondary Education
- 4 years of relevant experience
