POSITION PURPOSE
The Othello-UW Commons Program Manager is responsible for the daily management of the Othello-UW Commons facility and coordinates the curation of Othello-UW Commons student and community-engaged programming and activities.
In addition, the Program Manager supports evaluation and communication strategies for the Othello-UW Commons and connects campus and community partners to advance their goals and facilitate resource sharing.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Othello-UW Commons, the Program Manager of Othello-UW Commons will have the following responsibilities :
Curation of Othello-UW Commons student and community partner programming and activities (40%)
Lead the development and implementation of programming and outreach efforts to recruit, engage and support the success of South Seattle youth and South Seattle UW students.
Responsible for the success of programming events, including high school post-secondary planning support, admitted students welcome event, South Seattle Huskies Welcome Event, and Husky Experience planning events.
- Develop partnerships with South Seattle high schools and UW campus partners to establish a pathway of programming support from high school to UW matriculation and graduation.
- Advise and counsel South Seattle UW students to connect with service and leadership opportunities to support their UW educational journey.
- Lead efforts with CELE Center programs to develop and implement UW student engagement and K-12 student outreach programming at Othello-UW Commons.
- Lead the coordination and implementation of programming with UW departments that support UW student engagement with South Seattle communities through efforts including the Dawg Daze One Bus Away event in South Seattle and place-based tours for UW students engaging with South Seattle communities.
- Collaborate with Assistant Director to ensure the Commons hosts robust community engaged programs, events and classes on a regular basis.
Manage overall outreach and programmatic development of events in the space.
Management of Othello-UW Commons facility (30%)
- Serve as primary point-of contact for events and space inquiries
- Oversee reservations system and other administrative processes that maintain fidelity to guiding principles established for Othello-UW Commons.
- Oversee and manage operations to ensure that the Othello-UW Commons facility is welcoming to visitors and provides a positive experience for users of the space, including UW students, faculty, staff, community partners and K-12 youth.
- Update norms and expectations, including those pertaining to the public and private spaces in the larger complex of which the Othello-UW Commons is a part.
- Manage personnel schedules to ensure that a staff member is present at all times. Adjust own schedule to accommodate special events and other needs (scheduled and emergent) of the Commons.
- Supervise on-site Student Office Assistants (SOA). Lead on-boarding process for SOA when hired. Set clear expectations for performance and provide training as appropriate.
Respond to leave requests and conduct performance evaluations on routine basis. Create an environment for meaningful student development, professional growth and success.
Function as secondary on-site contact for events and programs.
Campus and community partner engagement (15%)
- Identify SE Seattle community partners and initiate partnership conversations
- Facilitate resource sharing and connection building between potential community and campus partners.
- Collaborate with key community partners to lead and implement community events that contribute to a thriving Othello neighborhood, including the annual Othello Park International Festival.
Communication, evaluation and budget coordination (10%)
- Coordinate communication strategies identified in OUWC communication plan ( crafting content for reports and newsletters, developing community and facility tours).
- Support evaluation efforts of Othello-UW Commons facility and provide support for evaluation efforts for SE Seattle community engagement.
- Work with Assistant Director to make spending decisions and adhere to program budget.
Contribution to CELE Center, EXPD, UAA and UW (5%)
Participate in and facilitate CELE staff meetings and working groups to support development and implementation of CELE Center initiatives.
Lead SE Seattle working group with CELE Center colleagues.
- Participate in UAA staff meetings.
- Participate in related University-wide efforts or committees as appropriate.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- BA degree in a related field.
- 2 years of experience with office management and working within a higher education OR a community-based / public organization setting
Equivalent education / experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license / certification / registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Excellent communication and customer service skills to work with diverse stakeholders and space users including residents, neighbors, non-profit leaders, UW faculty, staff and students.
- Strong organizational skills, problem solving skills, creativity, demonstrated attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
- Strong administrative and technical skills needed to manage a high-traffic physical space.
- Commitment to advancing equity in education, health and economic development.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working within both higher education and community-based / public organization settings
- Familiarity with the neighborhoods and communities of SE Seattle
- Experience hosting events at the Othello-UW Commons
- Ability to communicate with linguistically and culturally diverse community members.
- Community engagement experience with communities of color and local SE Seattle communities, relating to education, health and economic development.
- Experience and ability to build trusting relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including community partners, residents, students, faculty and staff of many social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Ability to work a non-standard work schedule which might include evening and weekend hours, and to be flexible with work hours to accommodate venue scheduling needs
- Ability to occasionally staff venue alone
- Ability to occasionally travel from worksite to UW campus and to other locations ( southeast Seattle, downtown Seattle, south King County) for meetings
- Ability to lift / move 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally for classroom / event setup and tear down
