As a Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, you will help maintain and repair structures and facilities for the Airports Authority.

Facilities Maintenance Mechanic

This is a journey (full performance) level job in the Facilities Maintenance series.

Serves in the Structures and Grounds Division of the Engineering and Maintenance Department at either Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Washington Dulles International Airport;

or in the Operations and Technology Division at the Dulles Toll Road.

Makes the first analysis of maintenance or repair problems and takes the needed administrative, maintenance, or repair action(s) according to guidelines.

Uses proper tools, techniques, and materials to achieve structural soundness and a neat, attractive appearance in carpentry, wood crafting, roofing, masonry, and other building maintenance trades projects. Performs related functions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs a wide variety of duties involving a number of trades in the construction, maintenance, and repair of facilities and airport structures.

Constructs utility buildings, furniture, masonry and concrete units, and other special construction projects.

Makes repairs or initiates work orders to perform maintenance or repairs on items.

Troubleshoots problems, determines cause of problem and how to repair it, and determines who should make repair.

Plans and estimates materials needed for projects, determines sequence of work, estimates time required, and coordinates working time with requestor.

Performs roof repairs; inspects roofs to locate leaks and determine the extent of repair.

Performs punch out work on projects built by contractors.

Fabricates parts in cases where replacement parts are not available.

Installs or replaces restroom fixtures. Assembles furniture kits; designs, constructs, and repairs a variety of wood items.

Removes, replaces, or repairs interior signs, bulletin boards, and ceiling tiles.

Maintains exterior signs, including overhead roadway signage.

Performs monthly preventive maintenance inspections of all airport structures.

Repairs, overhauls, and performs preventive maintenance on mechanical devices.

At DTR Performs electrical, plumbing, and HVAC repairs and maintenance.

Installs, replaces, and repairs high impact panels, framing on terminal walls, and all glass in terminals.

Repairs and upgrades storm drains.

May maintain and repair jet bridges.

May be assigned to perform basic weld repairs.

May lead a team of maintenance mechanics for short projects.

May substitute for Leader in that person’s absence.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Four years of progressively responsible experience in carpentry, furniture building, roofing, or related building maintenance.

Four years of approved apprenticeship training in one of the core trades of the position and one year of practical trade experience may be substituted for the four years of required experience.

Knowledge of and the ability to perform carpentry and building maintenance trades work at the journey-level, including construction and repair of furniture, walls, floors, ceilings, and masonry units.

Knowledge of materials used in carpentry, masonry, roofing, and flooring and skill in selecting proper materials or substitute materials to meet specific purposes and needs.

Skill in using hand and power tools.

DTR only Ability to perform basic (light) electrical, plumbing and HVAC repairs.

Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics).

Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures to do so.

Knowledge of and ability to ensure compliance with building codes and life safety code.

Ability to make sketches to plan and layout work for special projects.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using a computer, computerized work order, and time and attendance system.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience maintaining and repairing furniture, walls, floors, ceiling, roofs, mechanical devices, and masonry units for a public or government entity.

Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL).

Large-scale snow removal experience utilizing large, Class B Commercial vehicles.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver’s license in good standing.

Licensed as a Class B CDL within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).

May bend, stoop, crouch, and work in a cramped position.

Work requires heavy physical exertion (lifting objects of 50 pounds or more).

Erects and works from fixed and suspended scaffolding or mobile lifts at various heights.

Is subject to potential hazards common to the airport environment and construction industry. Wears personal protective gear, as necessary.

Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.

A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
