We are seeking a highly-motivated Scientist to participate in a dynamic team focused on the generation and characterization of new algal strains and improving their performance through adaptive evolution and metabolic engineering, as well as mutagenesis and screening.
As our next team member, you will be proficient in classical strain improvement, as well as all aspects of molecular biology, including construction of transformation vectors, omics approaches, and real-time PCR.
In addition to the generations of new strains, you will be responsible for establishing and implementing new technologies and assays to advance our strain development platform.
Our ideal candidate will be able to think independently and successfully move projects through to completion. You will also be able to communicate effectively to a wider audience, which includes molecular biologists, chemists, fermentation scientists, and engineers.
REQUIREMENTS :
- Ph.D. in chemical engineering, bioengineering, or related fields. 1+ years of industry experience, preferred.
- Exceptional expertise in mutagenesis, high-throughput screening, and assay development.
- Excellent working knowledge of molecular biological tools and techniques.
- Detailed knowledge of strain improvement strategies, such as metabolic engineering, protoplast fusion, genome shuffling, and library screening.
- Experienced in the assessment and application of omics data (including genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic).
- Self-starter who can design, execute, troubleshoot, analyze, and document experiments with minimal supervision.
- Result-oriented with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively convey scientific concepts and results.
- Ability to critically analyze data, interpret results, and leverage findings for the development of new innovative technical solutions.
- Prior experience with lab automation, NGS library prep, FACS, ddPCR, CRISPR, or synthetic biology with eukaryotic organisms, such as plants or algae is a plus.
- Willingness to work off-hours / weekends as projects demand, when needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Perform random mutagenesis and screening to generate new strains with improved phenotypes.
- Identify and implement new technologies and / or assays for strain improvement and high-throughput screening.
- Develop and optimize scale-down model for strain screening.
- Apply knowledge gleaned from genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomics data to engineer new strains to obtain desired strain phenotypes.
- Identify and address factors (difference in transcription, translation, post-translational processing, or activity of key metabolic genes / proteins) that lead to differences in strain performance.
- Characterize lead strains to support strain and fermentation development.
- Support strain characterization for regulatory filings.
- Operate at the interface of molecular biology, strain development, and fermentation development.
- Maintain an accurate notebook; write technical reports, standard operating procedures, and invention disclosures as needed;
and present experimental data internally.

The below range reflects the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.
An employee’s title and position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, performance, and business or organizational needs.
The base salary range for this role is $100,000 to $120,000.
