Overview
The Department of Comparative Medicine provides for the care and housing of research animals throughout the OHSU campus and supports the basic care and husbandry needs of a large variety of laboratory research animals including but not limited to fish, amphibians, birds and a wide range of rodent and non-rodent mammalian species.
The Assistant Facilities Technician is expected to acquire an understanding of the regulations, guidelines and departmental standard operating procedures pertaining to the care and use of laboratory animals.
The Assistant Facilities Technician position requires interaction with all animal species under DCM care.
The primary function of the Assistant Facilities Technician is to perform repairs to equipment and caging and conduct general building related tasks to include minor repairs, plumbing, carpentry, changing light bulbs and filters.
The Assistant Facilities Technician will also have general labor responsibilities, which includes laundry, housekeeping, stocking of supplies, and assisting in performing corrective and preventative maintenance on equipment and other facilities related tasks.
Function / Duties of Position
- Performs building and equipment maintenance to include replacement of light bulbs, carpentry, painting, plumbing or other related needs.
- Performs preventative maintenance and repairs to equipment and animal caging. Routine maintenance and trouble shooting of vacuum bedding system, greasing and changing wheels on carts and racks, adjusting individually ventilated cage systems and automatic watering systems as well as other equipment as necessary.
- Operates rack washers, tunnel washers, autoclaves, bottle washers, sterilizing equipment and Crematory. Cleans, sanitizes and sterilizes caging & equipment.
- Performs mechanical repairs and maintenance to HVAC system and other equipment. Changing of ventilated rack filters, water filters and HVAC filters.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
One year of facilities maintenance or trades related experience; or successful completion of a Facilities Maintenance technical training program.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with others.
- Ability to operate equipment such as cage washers, pallet jacks, forklifts and autoclaves.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and overtime as necessary.
- Basic computer skills.
- Posses and maintains a valid driver’s license.
