Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to perform carpentry work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of structures, equipment and furniture.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Enforces safety procedures to ensure safe operation of equipment and employee safety.
- Performs general carpentry work in the alteration, repair of windows, doors, floors, scaffolding forms and furniture.
- Performs hand bench work, using hand and radial saws, planes, wood lathes, drill presses, boring machines and electrical drills.
- Repairs walls, doors, door locks and replaces broken or worn parts.
- Mills and fabricates wood and plastic components needed to make repairs.
- Maintains records of carpentry repairs.
- Builds, installs, removes and repairs wooden structures or structural parts.
- Cuts and installs all types of glass in windows, doors and partitions.
- Installs and hangs prefabricated doors and windows; repairs broken window sashes; insulates walls, ceilings and attics;
and plasters, tapes and sands drywall and sheetrock seams.
- Constructs, assembles, removes and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood and wallboard to include but not limited to foundations, roofs, walls, window and door frames, stairs, and subfloors to build additions or to remodel existing structures.
- Estimates costs for building and repairing wood structures.
- Assumes responsibility for care of assigned vehicle, tools, and equipment.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience in carpentry or completion of a recognized carpentry apprenticeship program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
- Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check.
- Must complete the annual security awareness training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to :
- Bright / dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and / or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals / wildlife.
- Vibration; Fumes and / or noxious odors.
- Traffic; Moving machinery.
