Summary

The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) positions located in Oklahoma City, OK will provide clinical and administrative support for all matters relating to facility wide life-cycle management of medical equipment.

Biomedical support requires application of engineering and mechanical concepts to support diagnostic, therapeutic devices and monitoring equipment used in medicine and treatment.

Travel between facilities to accomplish work is to be expected.

Duties

The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) (Biomedical Information Systems) provides clinical and administrative support to staff, patients, and administrators for all matters of concern relating to the facility wide lifecycle management of networks, networked medical equipment and associated systems.

Biomedical support requires the application of engineering and mechanical concepts and methodology to provide lifecycle management and technical support of diagnostic, therapeutic devices, monitoring, and other equipment utilized in the practice of medicine, and to improve health service delivery systems for communities and within individual VA facilities (medical centers, outpatient clinics, and domiciliaries).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE POSITION :

  • Utilized other test equipment such as electrical safety analyzers, oscilloscopes, patient simulators, pulse generators, network analyzers, and multimeters to troubleshoot equipment and systems.
  • Manage and maintain information systems and interfaces as HL7, DICOM, TCP / IP.
  • Perform advanced testing of medical devices or information systems through VA facility's hardwired and wireless networks.
  • Apply Medical Device Isolation Architecture (MDIA) Guidelines in pre-procurement, system implementation and system management.
  • Apply basic networking principles to resolve medical system communication issues such as node to server failures.
  • Adhere to VA Medical Device Cyber Security policies in the procurement process and during system implementation.
  • Load operating system and clinical application software according to VA policy.
  • Respond to network incidents due to infection, loss of services, and policy changes per VA policy.
  • Implement lifecycle management of assigned medical devices and systems as life support, dialysis, and monitor physical and network support.
  • Complete installations, maintenance, modification, repair and calibration of complex therapeutic, diagnostic and life support medical devices.
  • Implement safety codes and regulatory standards as The Joint Commission (TJC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH).
  • Investigate, remediate and document recalls and safety alerts and participate in safety improvement processes as Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and identify hazards to ensure resolution.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and education to peers, medical technology end users and clinical staff.
  • Focus on and pursue professional development in medical technology lifecycle management technical skills, scientific advances, network protocols and vendor changes.
  • May serve as the Lead and manage installation and upgrade projects for advanced medical devices and systems.
  • Participate and contribute to Biomedical / Clinical Engineering committees and meetings.
  • Functions as Contracting Officer Representative (COR) and maintain current appropriate certification levels.
  • Applies basic networking principles to resolve medical system communication issues.
  • Coordinate with departments - Facilities Management Service (FMS), Office of Information Technology (OIT), Patient Safety, Sterile Processing Service (SPS), Logistics, Contracting, Informatics, and Environmental Management Service (EMS) for end of life replacement in conjunction with clinical services.
  • Investigate Repairable Medical Device (RMD) recalls and safety alerts issued through Recall Management System (ARMS).
  • Maintain professional development and current knowledge of changing medical technology, scientific advances, network protocols and lifecycle management through attendance at formal training and peer training.

Special Consideration / Requirements : Be able to work in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures. Able to work in confined duty and dirty areas or hot / cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics.

Work Schedule : Monday - Friday 730 am to 400 pm.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements :

  • United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency : Per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3j : No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.

S.C., chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English.

  • Experience and Education. In order to meet the basic requirements to be a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist for the Department of Veterans Affairs, you must possess either : Associates degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology or Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related technical field such as Electronic Technology or Information Technology and two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer, or Information Technology Specialist.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related field such as Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) or Information Technology.
  • Completion of a military training program in biomedical equipment and two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist or Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer or Information Technology Specialist.

Grade Determinations : GS-05 (Entry Level) - Applicants must meet the Basic Requirements listed above. GS-07 (Developmental Level I) - Applicants must meet the one year of creditable experience at the GS 5 grade level and also demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs).

  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply a great variety of technical data such as schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, table charts, mathematical expressions and formulas.
