Department Summary

SEASnet is the computing and IT support organization for the Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

It provides a wide range of services to faculty, staff, and students, with a primary focus on instructional computing and network infrastructure.

SEASnet's key responsibilities include managing computer labs, maintaining servers, supporting remote access for students and faculty, and ensuring the availability of specialized engineering software.

In addition, SEASnet oversees software licensing, system administration, and IT security for the school's instructional systems.

The team manages five instructional computer labs with 200 machines, as well as a remote lab environment, all designed to support students in achieving their academic goals.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with Samba in both UNIX and windows environments (Preferred)
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows operating systems and utilities, including experience with VBScript and PowerShell scripting. (Required)
  • In-depth knowledge of UNIX operating systems, utilities (including patching, troubleshooting, and upgrading), and proficiency in bash and C Shell scripting. (Required)
  • Practical knowledge of UNIX and Windows networking software, with experience in local area networking. (Required)
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools or software to identify and resolve hardware, software, and network issues. (Required)
  • Strong analytical skills to assess information, licensing requirements, problems, and procedures, and to propose improvements or alternatives with their implications. (Required)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact effectively with both technical and non-technical users. (Required)
  • Strong organizational skills to manage a complex workload, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and apply new knowledge to problem-solving. (Required)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of total quality management techniques to manage job scheduling, work areas, and time in alignment with organizational needs. (Required)
  • Strong customer service skills to effectively collaborate with faculty, students, and SEASnet coworkers. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Group Policy Management. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computing hardware and components. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AV hardware and components. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required) Or
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with 2 years of experience, or equivalent work experience (Preferred)

Special Conditions for Employment

  • Background Check : Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check : A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Age Requirement : Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
  • ABILITY TO LIFT AND CARRY 35-50 LBS. (Required)
  • FLEXIBILITY TO WORK ON EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS AS NEEDED. (Preferred)
  • FAMILIARITY WITH OSHA AND / OR UNIVERSITY GUIDELINES RELATED TO FACILITIES USE. (Preferred)
